Hours per week:   40.00 Standard, between 7:00AM and 7:00PM

Location:  The Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas (Austin – Main Campus)

 

General notes:  Occasional Saturday hours required.

Purpose of Position: 

The Head, reporting to the Associate Director for the Library Division, has the primary responsibility of providing leadership, supervision, and management for the daily operations of the Harry Ransom Center’s Reading and Viewing Room. The Head cultivates an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere to researchers across disciplines and with various research competencies by training and mentoring currently a team made up of five FTE and seven students, as well as facilitating and developing policies and procedures that ensure the unit meets its strategic goals. The Library Division embraces a highly collaborative environment and the Head works closely with other units and teams regarding reference, instruction and outreach, safety and security, cataloging, and diversity and inclusion initiatives.

 

Essential functions: 

 

  • Administer and oversee special collections reading room and research services operations, including reception, circulation, security, reference, and paging to ensure high-quality and user-centered service to all researchers and classroom users; work closely with curatorial and research services staff to support the Center’s active teaching initiatives; formulate, revise, and implement public services policies and procedures in response to evolving operational needs; interpret and communicate such policies to students, faculty, and staff. oversee reading room security while creating an inviting and welcoming space for researchers with diverse interests and backgrounds. (30%)
  • Supervise, train, and schedule library administrative assistant, members of the circulation and paging staff, Federal Work Study students, and other public services employees, including staff mentoring and cultivation of a dynamic, inclusive, and highly collaborative workplace environment. (20%)
  • Work closely with curatorial, conservation and cataloging staff to ensure the highest standards of collection care; track use of collection materials using the Aeon system and oversee research services statistics. (15%)
  • Serve as a member of the reference and research services staff and answer or refer questions from patrons relating to all collections; process photoduplication orders and provide guidance regarding copyright issues and permissions. (15%)

 

  • In collaboration with curators and faculty, interpret collections through participation in classroom presentations, demonstrations, tours, web/print publications, and small exhibitions. (15%)
  • Participate in professional development activities and training. (5%)

 

  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required qualifications: 

 

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent advanced library or archival degree.
  • At least four years of experience in a university, library, museum, community organization, or other setting in support of research and teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and in oral presentations.
  • Demonstrated supervisory and scheduling experience and a commitment to diversity and inclusion, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Outstanding team orientation, flexibility, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

 

  • Advanced degree or coursework in a discipline aligned with the Ransom Center’s major collection strengths.
  • Experience with Aeon special collections management system or similar software.
  • Speaking and writing fluency in Spanish or French.
