Hachette Book Group – Posted by Hachette Book Group Anywhere

Job Description

Hachette Book Group Associates Program

WE WANT YOU!

Have you ever considered a career in publishing? It takes a whole team of creative people with many different strengths to produce that beautiful hardcover or paperback at the bookstore. If you are passionate about books and want to be a part of bringing them to readers, we’re looking for you!

The Program

The HBG Associates Program is a paid full-time 12-month learning and development work experience for individuals interested in exploring career paths at HBG. We encourage anyone interested in launching a career in publishing, especially those from backgrounds that have been underrepresented in the industry, to apply for this unique opportunity.

Associates will receive career counseling, mentorship, and one-on-one guidance from HBG employees, both in their areas of interest and in the job search and interview process.  Each Associate will have weekly meetings with an assigned primary mentor dedicated to helping them make the most of the program. At the end of their experience, Associates will emerge as well-rounded, future publishing professionals and will become eligible for roles at HBG. Though placement at the company is not guaranteed, we will give Associates first priority in interviewing for openings for which they qualify.

Associates complete three, four-month rotational assignments across various departments, acquiring skills, knowledge and hands-on work experience. Publishing departments open to Associates include:

Editorial: Do you love reading, analyzing, and asking thoughtful questions about books? Do you like helping to shape stories that reach a diverse range of readers?

Marketing: Are you a social media expert with an interest in shaping the conversation around books and finding creative ways to promote books and authors?

Publicity: Have a knack for knowing all types of media and which sites would be best to help great new books grab attention?

Managing Editorial: Do you always spot a typo, and enjoy helping others stay on track?

Sales: Are you a people person with an interest in consumer behavior and the art of the pitch?

Contracts: Are you a detail-oriented and assertive, with a knack for negotiating?

Art: Are you curious about what makes a book cover stand out on the shelf and visually communicate to an audience?

Production: Are you fascinated by the physical details of a book—the binding, the paper, the type, the ink used on the jacket?

Marketing Strategy: Are you interested in marketing analytics, pricing strategy, metadata, audience development, or video and podcast production?

Subrights: Are you interested in world cultures and selling into different countries?

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in the book publishing industry
  • Ability to work remotely from wherever you live and interact with colleagues in departments in several US locations
  • Some college preferred, but not required
  • Previous administrative, professional work experience and/or internship experience preferred, but not required
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Detail oriented and organized
  • Committed learner who is interested in gaining knowledge and skills in a variety of functional areas

In order to be considered, please submit both a resume and a cover letter. At the end of your cover letter, please: 1) rank the publishing departments in order of interest to you, and 2) tell us the titles of three of your favorite books.
