The Grants Development Specialist is a new role in the ACLU of Maryland’s Development Department, based in our Baltimore office. The Development Department currently operates as a small shop and works to secure funding to enhance the issue areas of the justice system, education equity, individual autonomy & government accountability, voting rights, and immigrants’ rights, among others.

The ACLU of Maryland is a non-partisan, non-profit public interest organization devoted to protecting civil rights and civil liberties. The ACLU of Maryland is an affiliate of the national ACLU, a key defender of civil liberties guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. The ACLU works in the courts, legislature and in communities to defend and expand individual rights and personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and civil rights laws. The ACLU of Maryland is committed to centering race equity in our work, internally and externally, in order to better support and be accountable to communities of color, whose civil rights and civil liberties are systematically threatened by white supremacy.

The Grants Development Specialist will serve as the grant writing and research enthusiast for the organization, partnering with the Development Director and program staff to ensure preparation of high-quality funding proposals and reports. They will provide administrative support to the Development Department and will be an integral part of the internal work of the team.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, with meticulous attention to detail and passion for grant writing and research. They enjoy connecting the dots and creating new opportunities to secure financial support for the ACLU’s important work. They have the skills and confidence to work independently, with the ability to manage their time effectively. They are knowledgeable about civil rights, with a demonstrated commitment to advancing racial equity personally and professionally. Roles and Responsibilities

Grant-Writing and Prospect Research

Partner with staff to research, write, and submit creative and compelling grant proposals;
Partner with staff to develop and transform ideas into successful grant proposals;
Schedule and track grant activities and alert program staff to upcoming deadlines;
Ensure compliance with funder agreements and on-time submission of deliverables;
Conduct research and compile data on potential funding sources;
Maintain contact with external agencies and respond to inquiries as necessary
Development Department Administration

Work within Salesforce to ensure portfolio tracking, reporting, and accuracy of donor records;
Enter gifts and prepare acknowledgement letters and bank deposits;
Apply for and represent the ACLU of Maryland at workplace giving fairs;
Coordinate logistics for development events;
Work in collaboration with the Development Director to produce and annually update a Development Department policies and procedures handbook;
Answer general development inquiries by phone and/or email

Experience identifying funding sources and writing successful foundation grant proposals for non-profit advocacy organizations is required. Transferable experience will be considered;
Experience creating documents, presentations, donor lists, etc. in Microsoft Office;
Experience using donor databases preferred;
Must highly value collaboration, have patience, and see purpose in detail-oriented work;
Ability to think strategically, develop effective solutions, and take initiative;
Dependable, punctual, and flexible;
Minimum 5 years on a development team;
A strong commitment to racial equity, dismantling white supremacy, and incorporating a structural power analysis into work. Must have knowledge and understanding of how power is manifested in matters of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstances.
Compensation and Benefits

Salary $58,000-$62,000 depending on experience. Excellent benefits include two weeks paid vacation at time of hire (increasing to three weeks after one year, and four weeks after five years); 12 office holidays; 12 paid sick days; six weeks paid parental leave; medical and dental insurance for staff members, their dependents and spouse/domestic partner; life and long-term disability insurance; 401(k) plan with employer match; and direct exposure to cutting-edge civil liberties and civil rights work. This is a position covered by the overtime protections of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is in the bargaining unit represented by OPEIU Local 2.

Deadline/Start Date

The position will remain open until filled. Interviews will be scheduled on a rolling basis.
