POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The Grant Writer is a critical member of Water For People’s Donor Impact team, writing grant concepts, proposals, and reports to secure and maintain funding for Water For People’s vision of a world where every person has access to reliable and safe water and sanitation services. The Grant Writer will largely focus on making the case for supporting the outstanding work of our five Latin American country programs: Bolivia, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, and Nicaragua. To do this, the Grant Writer will utilize internal reporting tools in English and Spanish to tell their stories, primarily to English-speaking audiences with the possible opportunity to support materials for Spanish-speaking audiences as well. This role supports effective communications by fashioning persuasive pitches tailored to the donor’s level of familiarity with water, sanitation, and hygiene. Powerful and compelling written materials will be developed for corporations, foundations, individuals, bilateral, and multilateral agencies to meet and exceed Water For People’s annual revenue targets.

The grant writer works closely with the Grants Unit to ensure an efficient proposal development and review process and works closely with Global and Country programs to verify data and information used for grants or reports. This work requires the ability to process multiple sources of complex information into clear and concise written products. The role also requires comprehension of written and spoken Spanish, and participation—at times verbal participation—in country program-led meetings in Spanish.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:  

  • Conducts the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant concepts, proposals and reports to donors as directed by Relationship Managers and Senior Grant Writer
  • Complies with all grant reporting as required by donors
  • Works closely with the Grants Unit to achieve a seamless cross-departmental process for development of proposals and reports
  • Advises Relationship Managers on strategies to fit programmatic work to donor interests
  • As requested by offices in Latin and Central America, provides support to or training for in-country funding opportunities, serving as a resource to the local/regional Business Development teams
  • Works across departments to identify funding targets, and gathers accurate and relevant information to build and write the best possible case for each donor
  • Serves as an informational resource to the Donor Impact Team and Grants Unit

 EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline or equivalent work experience is required
  • 2 or more years of progressively responsible writing experience aimed at raising revenue is required
  • 1 or more years of experience working for a nonprofit required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Excellent narrative-writing ability is required
  • Ability to research and synthesize complex sets of information is required
  • Highly accountability, with the ability to effectively manage both the big picture and small details while executing on both, is required
  • Excellent organizational skills, and the capability to handle important tasks simultaneously while responding to unanticipated developments, is required
  • English fluency is required
  • Able to communicate clearly in Spanish is required.
  • Familiarity with the key concerns of the water and sanitation development sector and a genuine appreciation for the approach of Water For People preferred
  • Knowledge of the concerns and protocols of the range of funders preferred
  • Experience living or traveling in one or more of the countries where we work preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position has the option to work from an office or remotely at Water For People in Denver, Colorado or from another location in the US with the exception of NY, NJ, VT, WA and CA.
  • Candidates from these Latin American countries, Guatemala, Honduras and Peru, are encouraged to apply and can work from a Water For People office or remotely.  Applicants must be a citizen or legally authorized to work in one of these three countries.
  • This position reports into the Denver, Colorado global office.
  • This is an exempt position if based in the U.S.
  • Ability to work extra hours and outside regular business hours when there are urgent needs to maintain business continuity, and work with team members located in other time zones.

Salary Range: 

 US anticipated salary range:  $52,000 – $62,000 / YEAR
