Job Description
THIS IS A 10-MONTH FULL-TIME POSITION beginning August 2021.
GLSEN Youth & Community Engagement AmeriCorps Member Objective: This position supports queer students and educators in K-12 schools in Massachusetts, with a primary focus on Western Massachusetts and the Berkshires. The member will seek to develop and sustain programs that facilitate youth engagement, leadership, and support, particularly amongst poor and working-working class LGBTQIA+ youth and LGBTQIA+ youth of Color in Western Massachusetts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Strengthen and coordinate a Western MA SHINE Team, a youth leadership program for GLSEN MA
- Develop relationships with and consistently support Gay Straight Alliances and LGBTQIA+ students and educators in Western Massachusetts
- Assist with coordination and execution of the Educator Retreat, Pride Prom, Spring & Fall Conferences and national Days of Action (i.e., Day of Silence, Pride festivals, etc.)
- Develop sustainable partnerships with social justice centered community organizations in Massachusetts via outreach, tabling, resource referrals, etc.
- Create and manage a volunteer program to support the work and mission of GLSEN MA
- Manage, respond and direct emails and phone calls to appropriate parties
- Strengthen and maintain social media program
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
DIAL/SELF AmeriCorps Members serve full-time to create positive youth development opportunities in schools and youth centers throughout the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts. AmeriCorps members use a collaborative, student-centered approach to support young people’s autonomy, belonging, and personal learning aspirations.
The DIAL/SELF AmeriCorps Program (DSAP) has 3 core elements:
- On-site youth work with a specific school or youth center.
- Team service project in collaboration with youth and community.
- Weekly training and reflection to build youth work skills and increase knowledge of different learning styles, social justice issues, creative approaches, motivational interviewing, asset-based community development, group dynamics, and facilitation.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
- Members must be at least 18 years old, a US citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident, and have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalency.
