Full-Time Fleet and Equipment Technician

Job Description

This is a semi-skilled position involving the maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy duty trucks and off road machinery. Work involves performing semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of gasoline, diesel, small engine and hydraulic powered equipment. Work is performed under general supervision allowing opportunity for independent judgment.


The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Perform Preventative Maintenance Tasks (60%): Perform preventative maintenance to equipment including, but not limited to, automobiles, trucks, trailers, tractors, end loaders, excavators, motor graders, etc. Perform maintenance and repairs to small engine driven tools and equipment.
• Perform Building Maintenance Tasks (20%): Keep shop areas and equipment in a safe and orderly fashion. Perform facility maintenance duties as assigned.
• Perform Minor Equipment Repairs (15%): Perform minor repairs to brakes, air conditioning systems, electrical, fuel, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies, clutches and related systems. Operate a variety of hand, electric and air driven tools provided by Central Garage. Help mechanics as needed.
• Assist with Stockroom Tasks (5%): Pick up parts, put away stock inventory orders and assist with inventory counts.
• Perform other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:
• Degree from an accredited technical college in Automotive, Diesel or Heavy Equipment Mechanics.
• One (1) year of experience with progressively advanced training working on automobiles, diesel engines or heavy equipment in lieu of a degree.
• Wisconsin CDL, Class A with N endorsement and no air brake restrictions, or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
• Possess, or have the ability to obtain within one year of hire, at least two ASE Certifications: Medium-Heavy Truck Brakes (T4) and Auto Maintenance and Light Repair (G1) or Medium-Heavy Truck Preventative Maintenance Inspection (T8).
• Possess, or have the ability to obtain within one year of hire, at least one Automotive Air Conditioning Certification: EPA 609 Technician Certification or ASE Automobile Heating & Air Conditioning (A7) or ASE Medium-Heavy Truck Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) (T7).

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Understanding of preventative maintenance philosophies and maintenance programs.
• Knowledge of the mechanical principles by which machines, equipment and tools operate.
• Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods and practices used in a variety of maintenance and light repair operations on machinery and mechanical equipment.
• Knowledge of brake, engine, electrical, fuel, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and small engine powered equipment and related systems.
• Ability to perform heavy physical labor.
• Possess basic computer and clerical skills, including the ability to complete all paper work and records in an accurate and timely manner.
• Knowledge, understanding and application of safety practices related to job functions, including the proper handling of hazardous materials.
• Possess good communication skills, including the ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to work in a team environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use their hands to handle, feel or operate tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee will frequently climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. The employee will frequently lift and move 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move weights up to or over 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outside in adverse weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical equipment and parts and is frequently exposed to wet, cold, hot and humid conditions and to vibration. The employee may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, flying debris, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work area is moderately loud.
