The Position
Fisheries Technician (Community Service Aide II) description imageThe Portland Water Bureau is seeking applicants with fisheries experience/background to assist in the collection of field data in 2023.  The positions are Community Services Aides II, or CSAs. These are seasonal positions that will begin work in March 2023. Work in 2023 will extend through the spring, summer, and fall field seasons. The Water Bureau encourages candidates of diverse backgrounds to apply.

Fisheries Technician: Full Time Seasonal
These Fisheries Technician is expected to work approximately 35-40 hours per week (8-10 hours per day) from early March through September, and up to 10 hours per week from October through mid-December.  Some fisheries work would be on Saturdays and Sundays. The schedule may vary weekly and there may be some weeks where no work is available depending on river flow conditions, weather, or other factors. The Fisheries Technicians would report to work at the Bureau’s Emergency Operations Center, which is at the intersection of Powell Blvd. and SE 99th Ave., and then drive in a Bureau vehicle to the work sites.  The fisheries work would focus on monitoring juvenile salmonid smolt traps in the spring, conducting fish and fish habitat surveys in the summer, and completing adult salmon counts in the fall, with other duties assigned as time allows.

The Fisheries Technicians will work under the direction of Water Bureau staff but at times will do field work on their own with other Technicians.   The Fisheries Technicians may be cross trained to perform other biological duties as assigned by the Water Bureau.

Preferred applicants will have the following experience:
(Please note, these are not required but will be helpful)

  1. Operating rotary smolt traps
  2. Conducting fish habitat surveys
  3. Snorkeling and operating a backpack electro shocker
  4. Identifying and counting spawning salmon and redds

The anticipated hourly pay rate for the successful applicant is $22.00.

This recruitment is for seasonal employees.  Seasonal employees are limited to 1,400 hours per year, they do not accrue vacation leave but do accrue sick leave, and they are not eligible for retirement or health benefits.

To Qualify

  1. Ability to walk over uneven terrain and in and next to swift-flowing water, ability to swim
  2. Ability to lift and carry objects up to 100 pounds for short distances
  3. Ability to identify juvenile and adult salmonids native to the Pacific Northwest
  4. Ability to perform data recording and record keeping

Applicants must also possess:

  1. Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 per City/State mandate or have an approved exception by date of hire
  2. A valid Oregon driver’s license and successful applicants will be asked to provide a copy of their driver’s record from the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles
  3. The ability to work during inclement weather conditions and must have the physical ability to walk over uneven or steep terrain.
