About The Institute for Liberatory Innovation and the Equity Scholar in Residence program:

The Institute for Liberatory Innovation (ILI) is a social action generator, responding to urgent social challenges with innovative programs, services, and publications.  The Equity Scholar in Residence (ESR) program is an innovative approach to promoting social equity in schools, offering an alternative to approaches centered on DEI training, singular leadership or coordination, or punitive policy. The Equity Scholar in Residence implements of model based on genuine relationship; compassionate, restorative interactions; collaboration and responsive scholarship.

When you work with us as an Equity Scholar in Residence, you can expect:

  • Work that is meaningful. You will be working in a vocational technical high school in Barre, VT to support educators in their learning and growth on all matters related to equity utilizing ILI’s framework of the Equity Scholar in Residence Model.
  • Colleagues and research you can count on. While other ILI staff will not be physically at the same location, you’ll have access to a Senior Equity Scholar for thought partnership weekly, and a team of researchers and their insights into matters related to social equity.

In this role, you’ll support educators and school leaders 20-30 hours per week in a wide variety of ways, including:

  • Building genuine and trust-based relationships
  • Responding to educators’ questions, ideas and challenges in person, via email, phone, and video chat
  • Serving as a thought partner for educators to explore their relationship with and understanding of equity
  • Support difficult and imperfect conversations, problem-solving and communication related to social equity
  • Support and advise school leaders as they respond to equity related incidents and emerging challenges.
  • Co-presenting or facilitating professional development in collaboration with school staff, and in response to emerging challenges
  • Share your observations on social equity dynamics in the school community with educators and school leaders
  • Meeting regularly with school and district leaders to think together about challenges and opportunities related to equity in the school community.

In this role, you’re also expected to contribute to your own learning and growth, and ILI’s learning and growth 10-20 hours a week through:

  • Maintaining a list of useful resources to share with ESR colleagues
  • Tracking activity within the school for ILI’s evaluation purposes
  • Researching articles, papers and other collateral based on educators’ unique needs and challenges on topics related to social equity
  • Meeting weekly with a Senior ESR to share challenges, ask questions, and learn from the experiences of someone who may have faced similar situations
  • Immediately reporting concerns about relationships, model, or interactions to ILI
  • In all of the ways you learn best, staying current with emerging issues, new thoughts and ideas related to social equity

Importantly, all activities and duties related to this position must be aligned with the Equity Scholar in Residence Model and the ESR must follow all school rules, policies and procedures.

Skills and experience required for this role:

  • 5+ years of experience working with topics related to social equity, with educators, or other related experience
  • A master’s degree in a field related to social equity, education, or a similar field
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to gain trust and give respect to others through integrity, honesty, kindness, empathy, and authenticity
  • Curiosity about, open-mindedness to, and deep understanding of social equity issues
  • Comfort admitting what you don’t know and working quickly to identify information and resources related to specific social equity opportunities, challenges and plans
  • Strong ability to relay your ideas clearly verbally and in writing
  • Commitment to learner-centered methods of teaching
  • Commitment to a restorative, non-punitive approach to increasing social equity

Other Details:

  • This role is hybrid and flexible. There’s an expectation that an average of 3 days per week be spent onsite during the school year, although the exact schedule is dependent upon the school’s needs, which may change periodically.
  • The school is a vocational technical high school in Barre, Vermont
  • During the summer while school is out of session, there will be less need for your onsite presence at the school
  • The annual salary for this position is $65,000. Because compensation is tied to school budgets, the salary is not negotiable
  • The role is currently funded through June 30, 2024; with a successful Spring placement, the position will renew for the 2023-2024 school year
