Full-Time Equipment Operator

Job Description

This is skilled work involving the operation of light and medium duty construction and maintenance equipment. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of equipment with moderately complex operating requirements which require manipulative skill to operate. Performs duties of general laborer in maintenance and construction work when not operating equipment.

Assignments are usually received in the form of orders to accomplish a specific task, pick-up and deliver material or personnel, or drive according to an established route. Work is performed independently, but under the supervision of a Supervisor or assigned crew leader, and is reviewed through observation by a Supervisor during progress and upon completion considering results attained.


The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Equipment Operation (35%): Safe and efficient operation of all equipment to include but not limited to single axle and tandem axle trucks, combination vehicles, tanker trucks, vac-all trucks, jet-vac trucks, sewer cleaning equipment, water pumps, tractor backhoes, hydraulic excavators, street sweepers, flushers, light, medium and heavy duty end-loaders, asphalt pavers, melter applicators, light, medium and heavy rollers, road oilers, concrete saws, leaf pickers, tractors, mowers and similar equipment.
• Construction Operations (30%): Safe operation of hand tools, rakes, shovels, chain saws, brush chippers, mixers, routers, compactors, power concrete screeds, air compressors, and similar equipment and tools. Building manholes and catch basins, installing sewer pipe, grading and forming.
• Winter Operations (20%): Assist in winter operations such as plowing, salting, brine application and snow removal.
• Safety and Preventative Maintenance (10%): Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment and make minor adjustments and repairs to equipment including: changing tires, clean, lubricate and fuel equipment as necessary, and report discrepancies to supervisory personnel.
• Building and Grounds Maintenance and Other Regular Duties (5%): Perform housekeeping tasks, perform landscape maintenance, assist Sanitation Division with route collection and assist other divisions as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Two years of experience within the last five years in the construction field, operating motorized construction or maintenance equipment.
• Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin CDL class A with N endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Thorough knowledge of municipal equipment operation.
• Skilled in the operation of a manual transmission.
• Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment.
• Ability to perform assigned tasks in a safe, efficient and timely manner with minimum supervision, and with sufficient skill to recognize potential problems or difficult situations that require further supervisory instruction or consent.
• Familiarity of road construction supplies used to repair and maintain asphalt and concrete pavement, sidewalks, curbing, sewer manholes and inlets.
• Thorough awareness and understanding regarding the safe use of chemicals and other materials.
• Ability to work in adverse or hazardous weather conditions.
• Ability to safely do ladder work.
• Ability to work effectively with co-workers and crews to produce desired outcomes.
• Ability to maintain effective relationships with other employees and the public; ability to handle situations in a courteous and tactful manner.
• Ability to multi-task and set priorities effectively to meet established deadlines.\
• Ability to accomplish goals in a team environment.
• Ability to be accurate and pay attention to detail.
• Ability to be a self-starter and work both independently and collectively.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Some overhead lifting is required.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outside in adverse weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical equipment and parts and is frequently exposed to wet, cold and humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in elevated, precarious places and may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment may occasionally exceed 75dBA. Hearing protection is required in areas exceeding 85 dBA.

This position requires candidates to have a Class A CDL at time of application.

Available work shifts are 2nd (3 pm – 11 pm) and 3rd (Midnight – 8 am).
