Full-Time Entomologist (Full – Time, Temporary)

Job Description

The San Diego Natural History Museum is looking to hire a temporary, full-time Entomologist to assist with various projects within the Entomology Department.

Position Summary: 

The Entomologist will be the day-to-day coordinator for a variety of grant and contract funded projects in the department. The incumbent will also assist the Curator of Entomology and Entomology Collections Manager to perform a variety of both technical and routine duties. The primary responsibilities of the incumbent will be to perform field and laboratory entomological collection and identification tasks, assist with data management, analysis, and report writing. This is a job for someone who not only likes to be in the field, but who is also committed to data quality control and arthropod identification.

Responsibilities include: 
  • Research and contract assistance:
    • Field collection of arthropod specimens using various trapping methods.
    • Laboratory identification of arthropod specimens to at least order, specialization in a specific group of insects preferable.
    • Working in remote areas, solo or with a team.
    • Accurate and organized data management and assistance with report writing.
  • Collections curation:
    • Working with taxonomic keys to identify arthropods to genus and species.
    • Specimen preparation and data management according to department standards for incorporation into the collection.
  • Teamwork:
    • Mentor, coordinate, and advise technicians, apprentices, and volunteers as they relate to specific projects.
    • Working with external stakeholders, including land owners/managers and project collaborators.
Qualifications and Requirements: 
  • A graduate degree in entomology or a related field; or bachelor’s degree with equivalent life experience.
  • Project management experience that includes field and laboratory arthropod sampling and identification.
  • Must demonstrate experience in arthropod identification to genus and species.
  • Valid California driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Must be willing to work independently in remote areas.
  • Must be willing to occasionally work odd hours, and travel for multi-day field trips that may include camping.

Time Commitment: This position is expected to continue for one year, with the possibility of an extension should funded work continue to be available.

Pay:  $22-$25/hr

This position is eligible for benefits such as health insurance, vacation, 15 paid holidays, free admission into all of Balboa Park’s museums as well as free admission to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park.
