The Role
The English Language Arts Curriculum Designer will develop short-form video lessons that captivate, inform and educate students.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Curriculum Planning: In collaboration with other curriculum designers, build clear, standards-aligned unit plans. Develop instructional models for videos that maximize utility for teachers and pedagogical effectiveness for students. Research and validate these approaches with teachers and students.
- Script Writing: Develop compelling scripts for short-form video lessons that teachers and students love. Search out the most engaging and interesting approaches and stories that will “hook” students. Participate in a collaborative writing process by providing feedback to others and turning feedback from editors and other curriculum designers into even better work. Develop storyboards for your scripts to clearly communicate to illustrators and animators what will happen on screen.
- Video Feedback: Work closely with members of the video production team to provide direction and feedback on imagery, illustrations, and animations.
- Scaling: Develop production processes and criteria that clearly articulate what an amazing video lesson looks and sounds like and how to build it. Work with the user research team to provide direction for determining teachers’ and students’ needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- 2+ years of K-12 ELA teaching experience, with a preference for grades 6-12
- Familiarity with national ELA standards and existing ELA curricula
- Creative, with a knack for distilling complex concepts into simple, kid-friendly explanations
- Compelling storyteller, especially for nonfiction educational topics
- Strong pedagogical skills; able to lead students to self-discovery, rather than relying on rote content instruction
- Ability to empathize and intuit where students will struggle when learning a concept
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Self-starter who thrives in ambiguous, fast-paced environments
- High speed internet
