The Position

Kessel Run’s Systems Engineering Architecture Lead (“SEAL”) is responsible for building and growing a self-sustaining architecture community and practice. This role will need to be opinionated about what success looks like for our engineering architecture, and be able to prioritize across multiple ongoing objectives. Your day to day will evolve over time and we expect you to be the one that defines that.

What You Will Do

  • Cultivate a community of practice within Kessel Run where engineers are continuously learning from each other
  • Design the architectures for cross-portfolio communications and to define interface controls
  • Collaborate with Portfolio Engineering Leads to facilitate technical architecture development and adoption across portfolios
  • Coordinate technology roadmaps with product roadmaps to incrementally drive towards future architectures
  • Work with engineers to facilitate tech talks or workshops within the community
  • Advocate for our architecture in discussions with product teams so they can best document standards and interfaces
  • Support portfolio leadership in developing decision criteria and data from architectures
  • Lead and empower other engineering architecture leads in facilitating workshops
  • Empower senior engineering practitioners to advocate for and apply architectures on their product teams
  • Generate and manage engineering architecture workshops and resources to provide a repository of knowledge and practices
  • Allocate time to learn and keep up with product teams’ engineering challenges and provide guidance or facilitate discussions to resolve those challenges
  • Allocate time for self-growth and keeping up with architecture practices

Who You Are

  • You are comfortable defining what success looks like for the practice, and building your own backlog
  • You actively participating in and often facilitating key Leadership ceremonies: Standup, IPM, and Retro
  • You are able to gather, synthesize, and present feedback effectively
  • You are opinionated about how to scale our architecture and address technical risks at the scale of the portfolio and the entire weapon system
  • You are an advocate and promoter of the way we build software at Kessel Run, especially to people external to our organization
  • You are able to talk to the Why’s behind out core architectures with ease
  • You are a servant leader to your engineering architectures
  • You are able to drop onto a team that is struggling with a technical issue, and create high value over a short time without being disruptive
  • You have strong opinions about what the engineering architecture needs to be successful
  • You are experienced interviewing, and are excited about the opportunity to shape the future of who we have join the alliance!
  • You are a U.S. Citizen and have the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance

We hire at the GS-13 level equivalent. This means you can expect a salary of $102,601 to $132,064 (depending on experience) for a Boston-based position (pay will be adjusted by location), as well as paid time off, health, and retirement benefits. There are advancement opportunities to promote to senior levels after hiring.
