Job Description


We are seeking a well-rounded Electronics Engineer (Optics) join our multi-disciplinary Soil Carbon and Plant Intelligence team that are working on ambitious, world-changing initiatives. The successful candidate will establish and execute the unprecedented standard and design of optical systems to accelerate various aspects of precision in agricultural production. This position will lead the design of embedded systems, including but not limited to IoT, microcontroller boards, employing PCB design, wired and wireless network setup, sensor selection and power management.

Terramera will provide relocation assistance to the successful candidate. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and other relevant qualifications. 


To lead the development of our electronic systems to propel our optical architecture through use of IoT initiatives to build a foundation for the facilitation and acceleration of our Soil Carbon and Plant Intelligence function.


Reporting to the VP of Engineering, the Optics Engineer works closely with the engineers and scientists within the multi-disciplinary Research & Development and Soil Carbon groups.


  • Drive technical build-out and execution on optical instrument as part of a multi-faceted and interdisciplinary engineering team
  • Develop multi-level system requirements and technical specifications in collaboration with electronics, mechanical and machine learning engineers
  • Design and analyze end-to-end optical systems for regenerative agriculture
  • Evaluate and select suitable electronic components such as microcontrollers
  • Evaluate and select wired and wireless communication protocols and peripherals
  • Develop embedded firmware for individual system components and fully integrated systems
  • Build breadboard systems to evaluate and test the interoperability of chosen components
  • Own the system architecture documentation, design testing, risk analysis and verification activities
  • Integrate component SDKs and APIs on the Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and other microcontrollers into reliable software that operates in real time
  • Program custom simulations and modelling for use cases prior to deployment of computer vision and computational imaging algorithms
  • Liaise with external affiliates such as third-party vendors in sourcing new lens and sensors (camera) evaluation and integration
  • Serve as point of contact for troubleshooting and technical support of optical/optomechanical systems
  • Stay abreast of new opportunities and industry trends in optical design, photonics, imaging, etc.
  • Perform other related duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the job


  • Post-secondary education (Bachelors, Masters or PhD) in Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics, Optics or in relevant field
  • Proven experience in electronics engineering, with an emphasis on designing and integrating embedded systems
  • Background in optical instrument design activities, including optical instruments
  • Proficiency in design, schematic capture, simulation and layout of electronics
  • Experience in taking optical systems from concept and design to assembly, prototyping and release
  • Experience working with spectrophotometer/spectroscopy, spectrometer, spectral measurement, hypercube and/or fluorescent imaging is an asset
  • Proficiency in ray tracing and simulation software tools, such as MATLAB, Zemax, CODE V, Scilab
  • Experience with programming using C/C++, or Python is an asset
  • Knowledge and/or experience in image quality testing, lens design and test charts for lens/sensor assessments
  • Familiarity with agile project management is an asset
