Queens Botanical Garden is an urban oasis where people, plants and cultures are
celebrated through inspiring gardens, innovative educational programs
and demonstrations of environmental stewardship.

Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is a private non-profit cultural institution located on 39 acres of New York City public land in Flushing, New York. In FY19, the Garden served over 250,000 visitors, including 32,000 schoolchildren, and 48,215 through outreach efforts offsite. A recently completed visitor survey reveals that 45% of visitors speak a language other than English at home. This fact underscores the importance of the mission and the challenges and opportunities QBG faces daily in creating programs, exhibits and landscapes that serve the needs of people who live in and visit one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation. The Garden has committed itself to addressing the complex and ever changing needs of its diverse community and to being the place where people, plants and cultures meet.

QBG is seeking a full-time coordinator for four (4) non-school based programs for children ages 2-14: Children’s Garden, Garden Buds, Forest Explorers and Junior Naturalists. The Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day running of these seasonal programs. The Coordinator helps create a welcoming environment for families. The Coordinator reports to the Education Manager and works closely with the Director of Education and other education staff to ensure the delivery of safe, organized, and fun youth programming.

Responsibilities:
• Create and oversee all elements of current youth programs; including designing curriculum, coordinating registration, communicating with hundreds of families annually with diverse backgrounds, budgeting, tracking and evaluating
• Hire, support, train and manage teaching staff, volunteers and interns for these programs
• Develop and maintain a high morale of program staff and participating children
• Maintain the Children’s Garden– design, plan, care for plants from seedling to maturity; care for chickens, and surrounding landscapes
• Ensure that program activities and responsibilities are carried out including: health and safety, lesson delivery, inventory and organization of materials, garden maintenance and related tasks
• Research and analyze effectiveness of offerings; conduct comparative research
• Teach programs as needed
• Take initiative in supporting the department as needed
• Be involved in garden wide initiatives and programs as appropriate

Ideal candidates will:

• Have previous related experience—preferably coordinating outdoor programming and/or informal teaching
• Have a bachelors degree in education, botany, environmental studies, or related field or equivalent experience
• Be committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in educational settings
• Be passionate for working with children and families from widely varied backgrounds and life experiences
• Have experience supervising staff, interns and volunteers
• Be self-motivated with excellent communication and leadership skills–—ability to anticipate programmatic needs
• Have experience working with plants
• Be organized and efficient in managing spreadsheets of data, supply inventories and equipment—strong computer skills in google docs, Microsoft Office and others
• Be able to multi-task and prioritize; excellent attention to detail
• Have a drivers license
• Be available on weekends in the spring and fall
• Be able to work outdoors in a fast-paced environment
• Be First Aid and CPR certified
