YOUR POSITION WITH TNC
TNC Ohio has a decades long history of advancing land protection and conservation in the state, with the Edge of Appalachia (EOA) Preserve a prominent example of that work. Starting at just 42 acres in 1959, it now covers more than 20,000 acres of forestlands, grasslands, and rare prairie and glade habitats. EOA’s Land Steward contributes to the preserve by performing land management activities and maintaining areas frequented by the visiting public. This is a seasonal position lasting six months or less.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The EOA Land Steward removes non-native invasive species (NNIS), stewards EOA’s rare, xeric limestone prairies, upkeeps public trailheads and maintains trails. The EOA Land Steward will maintain hand tools, power tools, equipment, and land. The EOA Land Steward may also maintain preserve records using a database, PC or mobile device.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff or volunteers.
May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
May require long hours in isolated settings.
Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
May work under infrequent supervision.
May apply chemical pesticides for NNIS removal.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
Experience operating various types of equipment commonly used in land management in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. brush cutter, chainsaw, backpack sprayer, UTV, ATV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
Experience working in a team environment.
Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, pesticide application).
Ability to obtain driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1 – 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.
Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.

This position requires a valid driver’s license and compliance with the Conservancy’s Auto Safety Program. Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee’s motor vehicle record.
