Full-Time Director of Museum

Job Description

This position plans, directs, and administers the overall development and operation of the Museum, including finances, capital improvements, personnel matters, general collection development, exhibit creation, and all related services and activities. The position also actively participates in strategic planning for the City, directs the planning process for the Museum and works closely with the Museum Board to support the Museum’s mission.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Initiates projects and directs the Museum toward the accomplishment of its mission to collect, preserve, and educate, and also ensures the Museum conforms to all legal and ethical requirements. Works with the Museum Board, City staff, and others on the formation and implementation of the strategic plan and other initiatives. Has general oversight of operations, personnel, and Museum security. (40%)
• Develops, presents, and monitors Museum budgets, including operating, capital, trust, membership, grant, and other funds. Explores, writes, and administers grants. Consults with donors and sponsors on funding opportunities, estate planning, and works to build and maintain rapport with members and patrons. (20%)
• Leads the team in the conceptualization and implementation of exhibition projects. Works cooperatively with collection staff to ensure up-to-date collection management practices. Establishes and implements conservation priorities. Ensures that Museum offerings enhance school curriculum. (15%)
• Oversees marketing and public relations activities including membership development, community engagement, and fundraising. Researches and writes for Museum publications. (15%)
• Plans, directs, and oversees capital improvements. (10%)
• Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in History, Anthropology, or Education, and a Master’s degree in Museum Studies or a related field.
• Six (6) to nine (9) years of experience in museum work, including 3 to 5 years in a leadership position.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of museum administration and curatorial practices, exhibit development, and overall functions of a museum.
• Knowledge of artifacts.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to initiate, plan, coordinate and oversee projects.
• Ability to publicize the cultural and social values of the Museum through presentations articles, and other means.
• Ability to assign, direct, coordinate, and evaluate staff and their work.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees and the public.
• Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and a safe manner.

In evaluating candidates for this position, the City may consider a combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties of the position.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Equipment that a Museum Director would commonly use, including: personal computers, phone, voice mail, copy machine, fax machine, printer, calculator, and Microsoft Office software products.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, speak; use hands and fingers to handle and operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is moderately quiet. The work may be indoors or outdoors. The incumbent may be exposed to weather conditions typical of Wisconsin.
