Full-Time Director of Learning and Education

Job Description

Fred Rogers Productions (FRP) is looking for a Director of Learning and Education to advise and collaborate with multiple departments across the organization – including production, marketing, communications, station & community outreach, fundraising, and licensing – to realize our educational mission for children and families.  This is a full-time position with benefits.

 

Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Learning and Education will serve as a consulting thought-partner with production executives, content consultants, community outreach managers, communications and marketing professionals, grant writers, and licensing experts to integrate child development theory and learning theory into project outputs: video content, analog and digital games, formative and summative research, educational resources, at-home learning resources, hands-on activities, and funding proposals.

 

Candidates for this position must have strong experience in early childhood and elementary educational theory and practice and a demonstrated ability to apply that knowledge to creative content development, educational resources, and strategic communication that are grounded in child development theory.

 

Working from FRP’s Pittsburgh office is strongly preferred, but not required. Relocation assistance will be provided if needed.

 

This individual must be willing to follow CDC-established guidelines and company policies to prevent and limit the exposure of COVID-19. FRP has implemented a mandatory vaccination policy, subject to exemptions.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Bring expertise in early childhood and elementary education theory and practice into multidisciplinary approaches rooted in media, in collaboration with senior staff, assessing appropriateness for show content, learning resources, activities, and strategic communication.

 

Production-Related Work (estimated at approximately 65-70% of responsibilities)

  • Act as advisor on new content development.
  • Work with production teams to engage subject matter experts as needed.
  • Work with production teams to identify needs and opportunities for research/evaluation.
  • Source and manage small group formative research studies for FRP series, as needed.
  • Source and manage external partners/contractors to conduct research to assess learning outputs and outcomes for FRP series, as needed.
  • Work with digital production team to do playtesting of games and activities in development.
  • Present at conferences and to professional groups about learning goals of FRP’s programs.
  • Actively seek opportunities to encourage academic interest in advising on children’s media, especially among scholars from diverse backgrounds.

 

Marketing, Communication & Engagement-Related Work (estimated at approximately 20-25% of responsibilities)

  • Advise on marketing and communications efforts with attention to spotlighting educational effectiveness and impact for the intended audience through promotion, public relations, and social media.
  • Represent FRP’s educational approach in press interviews on occasion.
  • Work with community engagement team to support the development of supplemental content, such as downloadable hands-on activities and lesson plans, for children, parents, and educators.
  • Develop and implement plans to define and measure the impact of educational initiatives beyond broadcast with a primary focus on the needs of children, families, and communities.

 

Fundraising and Licensing-Related Work (estimated at approximately 10-15% of responsibilities)

  • Provide educational advice and review of grant proposals, sponsorship messages, and licensing and merchandising materials and occasionally present FRP’s educational approach to content in key stakeholder meetings.
  • Conduct literature reviews for proposal development, executive staff speaking engagements, marketing events, or other needs.
  • Support CEO and senior team on organization-wide initiatives, as appropriate.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in child development, education, media research, or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Understanding of key issues in the fields of children’s media and technology as well as early childhood and elementary education from academic research and practice/industry perspectives.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for academic and lay, non-specialized audiences.
  • Experience translating research and complex concepts for non-expert audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and autonomously, but also function well in a collaborative team setting, working across functions and different types of people.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and produce high-quality results.
  • Willingness to “roll up your sleeves” to support nonprofit mission and core values.
  • Excellent attention to detail. Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to think analytically and synthesize vast amounts of information.
  • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion priorities within the organization.
  • Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite – Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, Teams, the Adobe Creative Suite, and social media platforms.
  • Patience, empathy, flexibility, and kindness.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in child development, education, media research, or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years related experience
  • Experience managing formal or informal education research studies with children, parents, caregivers, and/or educators.
  • Experience advising or developing educational media resources (e.g., developing curriculum frameworks, co-viewing guides, reviewing scripts).
