Atomwise is the leading artificial intelligence (AI) drug discovery company, headquartered in San Francisco, CA. In partnership with major biopharmaceutical companies and pioneering academic researchers, we discover and develop small molecules that will improve human health and agricultural productivity. Every day we’re breaking new ground in the application of modern machine learning methods to pre-clinical drug development. 

Atomwise was founded in 2012 by Abraham Heifets and Izhar Wallach who both earned their Ph.D.s in Computer Science from the University of Toronto. Since then we’ve built a world-class team of experts out of our San Francisco headquarters and raised over $50M in funding from investors including Khosla Ventures, B Capital Group, Data Collective, Bayer Growth Ventures, and others. 

The Role

Our most valued asset is our human capital. That’s why we are looking for a Director of HR to join our team. You’ll be the first HR hire at Atomwise and should be excited about contributing at both hands-on and strategic levels, and have a proven track record of positively influencing teams and their leaders. 

The Director of HR will be responsible for our systems, processes, tools, and compliance, and will manage immigration, benefits and the onboarding and offboarding of new employees.  

As our first HR hire, you will have the opportunity and responsibility to shape our thinking, to design our approach to HR, to deliver on our responsibilities to our people, and to make our team effective and productive. 

You will

  • Serve as a strategic thought partner on people-related strategies and engagements across the organization.
  • Design and oversee compensation, benchmarking and leveling.
  • Propose and implement programs and processes that enable Atomwise to scale as an organization.
  • Manage benefits, retention and performance management programs.  
  • Utilize people metrics to drive key insights and decisions around growth and retention.
  • Build trust and strong internal relationships by making empathetic connections and understanding the needs of each team.
  • Manage our payroll and benefits system.
  • Own our onboarding and offboarding. 
  • Ensure that Atomwise employment policies comply with state and federal regulations. 

Preferred qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years human resource experience, preferably in a tech startup or biotech.
  • Proactive, can operate autonomously, and thrives in ambiguity. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and high level of emotional intelligence.
  • Comfortable handling employee relations issues. 
  • Solid understanding of federal and state employment regulations.
  • Excels at working on open-ended challenges and running them to completion.
