Seattle Academy (SAAS) is seeking a Director of Facilities to provide professional leadership, direction, and coordination of the school’s facilities and real estate functions in alignment with the mission, guiding principles, and values of our school. The Director of Facilities role is a highly visible and approachable member of our school community whether interacting with a student, collaborating with curricular deans and faculty on programmatic facility space needs, overseeing contractors in performing work, supporting the execution of SAAS events and functions, interacting with community neighbors, negotiating property leases, or serving as a key member of various facility, capital planning, or crisis management committees.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Leads the development, operation, and maintenance of the physical facilities and assets of Seattle Academy for major and critical building systems (HVAC, MEP, Elevator, Building Envelope, Fire Life Safety, etc.) and Custodial, Grounds, Recycle, and utility needs of the campus. 
  • Oversees, manages, and implements capital improvement projects, asset tracking and improvement, preventative maintenance, emergency repairs, space planning, event support activities, workflow management, and customer service response systems. 
  • Leads the development of work scopes, operational procedures, and overall strategic planning for the facilities activities of the school. 
  • Leads, manages, and/or mentors all facility personnel (employees or third-party contracts) responsible for the day-to day duties of preventative maintenance, repair, project and work order completion, incident response, event support, and customer service response for facility-related work. 
  • Works in collaboration with the Director of Safety and Director of Equity & Inclusion, and other members of SAAS leadership in development of inclusive institutional policies and services that promote accessibility and being Safe at SAAS. 
  • Maintains and reviews maintenance and repair records; periodically report on trends, anomalies, and concerns. 
  • Consults with, advises, and supports leadership, programmatic teams, faculty, and staff on current and projected facility needs on campus. Provides expertise and consults leadership on advanced technical problems that arise from day-to-day operations. 
  • Manages, responds to, investigates, and reports equipment building alarms, emergency issues, and incidents as they occur. 
  • Serves as primary liaison between the school and property managers of SAAS leased facilities and properties. Participates in lease negotiation and management, tenant/landlord relations, and manages all building maintenance and repair issues for those sites. 
  • Assures compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines for building codes, safety regulations, occupancy requirements, and others related to building operation. 
  • Serves as a key member of the building safety committees, crisis management teams, capital planning committees, and onboard task forces as required. 
  • Ensures that facility staff is adequately equipped and trained. Develops training plans for facility personnel and maintains training record. 
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned and needed in service of the school 

A successful Director of Facilities would have: 

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in facilities management, construction, and/or development. Minimum of 5+ years of managerial experience.  
  • Facility management knowledge, experience, and a positive track record on a multi-building campus. 
  • Desire, interest, and enthusiasm for working in an environment with middle and upper school-aged students. 
  • Strong organizational and communication abilities. 
  • Experience in managing, mentoring, and motivating teams. 
  • Strong customer-service orientation. 
  • Agility, influence, negotiation, and strong judgment & decision-making skills. 
  • Skills to work effectively with all constituent groups -teachers, parents, students, community, and administrative teams.  
  • Ability to be calm, competent, and clear in crisis situations. 
  • Creative and imaginative problem-solving skills in a school environment.
