Full-Time Director of Early Intervention, Risk Management and Safety

Job Description

Our Risk Management and Safety team is looking for an experienced Director of Early Intervention who is passionate about practicing communication and resolution principles and assisting members to achieve open and honest communication with patients, families, and our caregivers when harm occurs in healthcare. This position will support BETA HEART (healing, empathy, accountability, resolution, and trust) implementation by assisting our members and insureds with carrying out early resolution. The Director of Early Intervention is a Risk Management and Safety Team member who will liaise with Claims and Risk at BETA, and interact with BETA members in California, Oregon and Washington.  Are you passionate about communication and resolution?  Do you enjoy building long-lasting relationship with members and clients?  If so, our team is looking for you!  This position is eligible to telecommute, but must be based a commutable distance from any of our California offices: Glendale, Granite Bay, San Diego or Alamo.

ABOUT THIS ROLE:

In this role, you will report to the Vice President of Risk Management and Safety.  As a member of the Risk Management and Safety team, you will collaborate with BETA’s claims department and our BETA HEART members from initiation to resolution of pre-claim events applying the principles of HEART. You will build and facilitate trust and good will between healthcare facilities, their providers, and their patients/clients.

 

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:

  • Lead and further develops the Early Resolution domain of BETA HEART
  • May develop and publish educational content relevant to communication and resolution programs including providing guidance on licensing agency reporting, billing write-offs and release of liability
  • Work with members and clients when unexpected outcomes occur as part of the BETA HEART Core Team.
  • Manage HEART Event caseload in accordance with Risk Department procedures and in collaboration with HEART domain leads.
  • Participates in Stakeholder Consensus meetings as needed. Reinforces the importance of appropriate representation of all parties
  • Assist in identifying appropriate external (expert) review(er)s where indicated/needed
  • Educates other insurers, defense counsel, and the plaintiff’s bar as to the HEART process, encouraging proactive resolution that is fair to all parties involved
  • Monitors and records all HEART events and expenditures in CURIS.
  • In coordination with Risk Analyst, collects, aggregates, analyzes, and summarizes relevant data to inform HEART efforts through statistical analysis and narrative data stories.
  • Draft reports as necessary, including board reports, reinsurance information, and financial analyses.
  • Serves as active member of the Partners in Communication collaborative/committee.
  • Works to advance and spread the knowledge of HEART principles and practices across BETA and member organizations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of communication and resolution practices, claims processes, risk management and safety trends, and medico-legal principles.

 

What Success Looks Like:

 

After the first six months, you will….

 

Onboard, contribute, enhance the elements of the HEART Early Resolution domain and collaborate with BETA Risk Directors, members, insureds, and other BETA departments to fully imbed the principles of early resolution into processes at member sites.

 

After the first year, you will….

 

Manage the HEART event caseload and collaborate with others to achieve early resolution of all HEART events reported to BETA Healthcare Group.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience handling professional liability claims, preferably hospital and/or physician medical professional liability.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in medical jurisprudence or juris doctor preferred.
  • CPHRM required.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out multiple or varied tasks with long-range goals (multi-year); ability to establish priorities and arrange own activities.
  • Applies critical thinking and uses advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Maintain current knowledge of communication and resolution practices, claims processes, risk management and safety trends, and medico-legal principles.

 

 

Hiring base salary range:  $155,000-170,000 plus full benefits package

  • Note the amount listed is the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this position.
