The Director, Legal Services – Hospital and Corporate and Associate General Counsel (“Director/AGC”), leads a small in-house team that provides the full-spectrum of legal services to clients across the Hospital. As a key member of the broader Legal, Risk and Privacy Portfolio, the Director/AGC, in partnership with the General Counsel (“GC”), provides operational and strategic advice to all levels of leadership and is responsible for making high-level legal decisions to facilitate the business arrangements with external entities, including funders, suppliers and contractors, to ensure those arrangements are sound, feasible and consistent with Hospital policies and the law. In addition to leading a Team, the Director/AGC will have the opportunity to provide legal advice directly to a variety of stakeholders within the organization.  The Director/AGC will also oversee the Hospital’s Relationship (Conflict of Interest) Management Program and other compliance-related activities and will play a key role in managing the Hospital’s Insurance Program. Ideally, the successful candidate will be an experienced corporate/commercial lawyer with exposure to the hospital, health care and/or not-for-profit sectors and a proven track-record leading engaged and high-performing teams.

 

Here’s What You’ll Do

Legal & Risk Management 

  • Identify, address and manage legal needs in support of the relevant business units and strategic objectives
  • Identify areas of potential risk, work with clients to determine acceptable levels of risk and make appropriate decisions in partnership with the GC to support leaders in managing legal risk, including policy development

Continuous Improvement/Innovation

  • Keep abreast and monitor law and regulations, legislation, current organizational and legal philosophy, and precedent-setting cases to ensure internal organizational practices are appropriate, meet or exceed reasonable standards, and/or can be adapted to better meet the organization’s current and/or future plans

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

Leaders have a special role to play as will the Legal Team that is well positioned to identify, assess, and address systems that exist within the Hospital and outside it that are barriers to real inclusion and safety in the public health care setting and at work

Relationship Management

  • Build strong strategic relationships/partnerships/networks, both internal and external, to identify opportunities, gather intelligence, help the relevant business unit achieve its strategic goals and further enhance its reputation

Leadership & People Management

  • Lead and develop a Team within Legal Services, maximizing individual and Team engagement so that the Team is well-positioned to implement the department’s plans and programs¿and support the overall strategic and business objectives of the Hospital

Operations & Financial Management

  • Support and contribute to the development of the financial and operating plan for the assigned component of Legal Services and forecast associated budget needs
  • Track and measure legal expenditures and recommend opportunities to reduce operating costs
  • Participate in retention and management of external counsel. Responsible for development, coordination and updating of relevant SickKids-wide policies

 

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent degree
  • Membership in Good Standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Experience practicing law with relevant subject-matter expertise in the assigned component of Legal Services (Hospital and Corporate Operations)
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-call experience in private practice, in house, or a combination thereof while managing staff and budget
  • Experience in developing strategic recommendations/plans to address legal risk relevant to hospital setting
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing equity and diversity that contributes to an inclusive working environment
  • Superior time management skills with the ability to prioritize and effectively manage both planned and unexpected developments and opportunities
  • Ability to work under pressure with conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong judgment, maturity and decision-making skills & the ability to think conceptually
