Reporting to the City Manager, and supporting the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), your primary responsibility as Director, Government & Community Relations will be to oversee and direct the City of Hamilton’s intergovernmental relations, community relations activities including Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) strategies as well as the Community Enrichment Fund, and corporate adherence to the City’s Public Engagement policy. This key role will lead the City’s government relations strategies with direct oversight over government and stakeholder relations, community initiatives and the building of stakeholder relations to advance EDI in the community.

In this unique role, you’ll oversee the implementation of the City’s framework and policy for public engagement, and provide direction for the City’s external EDI strategy initiatives. Serving as a key senior advisor to the City Manager and SLT on these issues, you’ll spearhead a workplan that builds trust and confidence with EDI-seeking organizations, and foster strong business relations on public and confidential matters with senior administrative officials of the provincial and federal governments.

Providing support to Advisory Committees, Boards and other groups, you’ll budget management and forecasting across the team, provide professional consultation, and oversee the research and analysis of various legislative issues to present the City’s position on a wide variety of intergovernmental topics and issues. Leveraging your outstanding communication skills, you’ll attend public meetings to present the City’s views, develop effective working relationships with key contacts in other municipalities, provinces and agencies, and communicate with the Mayor, Council, SLT and other staff to provide information on relevant intergovernmental topics and issues.

Your duties will also include leading the development/implementation of corporate intergovernmental relations strategies, collaborating with municipal stakeholders and other partners, and providing strategic advice to the City Manager and SLT members for intergovernmental strategies on term of council priorities and other strategic City initiatives. Above all, you’ll ensure services are provided in accordance with City and provincial guidelines and in the most effective and efficient manner, consistent with the City’s Mission, Vision and Values.

Your success in this role will be supported by progressive management experience in Political Science, Public Policy, Government Relations or Business, normally acquired through a university degree in a related field from a recognized university or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. You possess strong political acumen demonstrated by having worked in a political environment, extensive and progressive management and senior leadership experience, and demonstrated experience in a role responsible for the development/implementation of community-based policies, strategies and/or programs.

With strong analytical, problem-solving and research abilities, you have experience overseeing a multi-disciplinary team in relevant areas including equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility and public analysis. You’ve developed keen analytical and business planning skills, exceptional interpersonal, consulting and communication abilities, excellent customer relations and client management skills, and the ability to coordinate multiple projects and manage multiple priorities. You can alter priorities to meet constantly changing demands and possess the skills to deal effectively with elected officials, representatives of other levels of government, management, peers, staff, and the general public.
