Full-Time Design Technologist

Job Description

This position is funded through the Digital Skills for Youth program and coordinated by the Independent Media Arts Alliance (IMAA) .
Devicist is a small company that builds custom-designed electronic and mechanical devices for events and exhibits. We are looking for our first hire, a design technologist to aid in our day to day activities. In this dynamic position you may be engineering a mechatronic device in the morning, coding in the afternoon, and working on a website or video the next day. You are a recent graduate that is a “Maker” at heart. You are familiar with a range of technologies including Arduino, 3D printing, CAD, and Adobe CC, and are willing to learn more as needed. You have the flexibility to work in person or remotely as required. You need to be a self-starter, a good communicator, and have a positive attitude.
Duties and responsibilities
* Work with internal stakeholders and clients to develop, document, and maintain software / hardware deliverables for various projects
* Learn and further develop software and hardware tools, following good practices and habits
* Program software including: firmware, control software, visualizations/simulations and mobile apps
* Develop PCB designs from breadboard prototypes, to schematics, PCB layouts and manufacturing files
* Use rapid prototyping tools and CAD to design and fabricate physical concepts that approximate target user experience
* Develop and release marketing materials
* Manage individual workload to meet project milestones
Knowledge and skills
* Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, digital/new media, a related discipline, or equivalent experience
* A self-starter who can work remotely and reliably make progress on assignments
* Experience designing and developing hardware / software prototypes
* Some of the following:
* Experience with user-experience design methods
* Experience developing software in C++, Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, and/or React Native
* Experience working on microcontrollers and single-board computers especially Arduino, and Raspberry Pi for the rapid development of digital devices
* Experience in electronic design and developing custom PCBs in Eagle CAD that implement various actuators and sensors
* Experience in CAD tools, especially Fusion 360
* Experience with rapid prototyping tools and techniques (e.g. laser cutting, 3D printing, and hand-tools)
* Experience with Adobe CC, video editing
Other Requirements:
  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age when hired;
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada (either a citizen, permanent resident or person with refugee status);
  • Self-identify as underemployed (i.e. employed below their level of education, holding part-time employment, or in emerging fields with few jobs);
  • Have completed post-secondary studies (exception: interns located in Nunavut, Yukon or NWT are not required to meet this criterion);
  • Have no immediate family relationship with the employer.
