The ideal candidate will provide graphic design and project management support within a fast-growing, high-impact education nonprofit. The opportunity will include designing brand-aligned materials (publications, pitch decks, infographics, social media shareables, digital illustrations, in-house marketing collateral, and more) for client- and field-facing releases, supporting our business generation and client work with proposals and client-facing decks, enhancing XR and editorial work with visual and brand support, and coordinating and tracking project management with external creative partners and vendors for major Bellwether releases such as Missing in the Margins and Reimagining the Road to Graduation. Location is flexible, enabling us to hire the best person for the role, regardless of geography.

About Bellwether Education Partners

Bellwether Education Partners is a national nonprofit focused on dramatically changing education and life outcomes for underserved children. We do this by helping education organizations accelerate their impact and by working to improve policy and practice.

Bellwether’s XR team oversees development, communications, and production to support and amplify the organization’s field impact. The team works closely with in-house subject matter experts to create public-facing materials that will resonate with key stakeholders, including policymakers, private sector funders, advocacy organizations, school leaders, and news media organizations. XR is a central resource for development, grants, media relations, owned and earned communications strategy for outreach campaigns, digital strategy, editorial, and all manner of production for client- and field-facing collateral.

Job Requirements

The Design and Visual Associate will be a core part of Bellwether’s growing XR team and will assist on projects across the organization, including client-facing work within the Strategic Advising and Policy and Evaluation practice areas. Occasionally, the Design and Visual Associate will serve as a project manager on major projects (e.g., website releases and brand redesigns). The position will report to the Editorial Manager, Amber Gorman Walker.

As the Design and Visual Associate, you should expect to:

  • Turn complex or nuanced concepts into compelling visuals, in collaboration with external creative partners.
  • Work within a pre-existing template or create new templates for a range of brand-aligned collateral.
  • Support project management, tracking internal and external deliverables (which may include drafting creative briefs and tracking team inputs and next steps).
  • Manage competing deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced remote-work environment, balancing short- and long-term projects.
  • Work in a cross-functional, fast-paced environment across multiple teams and project leads.
  • Participate in team meetings and regularly present to development leads and project managers on project status, design approaches, and revisions.
  • Receive, accept, and incorporate constructive feedback.

Qualifications

Bellwether is a good fit for professionals who possess strong personal drive and motivation; who demonstrate exemplary professional behavior and values; and who are resourceful, responsible, tenacious, independent, creative, and self-confident.

Excited? We are, too. You should apply if you have:

  • A clear passion for and commitment to improving U.S. schools serving underserved students and a general familiarity with and/or curiosity about challenges and disparities facing these student populations from early childhood through college.
  • A commitment to Bellwether’s core values, particularly those around increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as anti-racism.
  • Three to five years of work experience in a creative service agency or other professional setting as a graphic designer, with working knowledge of best practices in design.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Mastery of the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, etc.).
  • A fierce attention to detail and a commitment to producing quality, brand-aligned work.
  • An ability to synthesize and translate abstract and/or nuanced concepts into compelling visuals for a wide range of audiences.
  • A demonstrated ability to project manage and meet short- and long-term deadlines with strong writing skills; self-starter instincts; ability to execute projects successfully without constant supervision.
  • Ability to design against a creative brief, distilling complex ideas and visualizing data, while incorporating feedback in revision processes.
  • Ability to think creatively and innovatively about ways to amplify Bellwether’s visual storytelling.
  • A well-rounded interpersonal skill set (including strong presentation skills and a sense of humor) with the capacity to work well independently and in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (e.g., PowerPoint, Word, Excel) as well as the Google platform.

The following skills are preferred but not required:

  • Familiarity with project management programs (e.g., Smartsheet).
  • Experience with web-based content management systems (e.g., Drupal and WordPress) and CRMs (e.g., Salesforce).
  • Familiarity with videography/photography shooting and editing, animation techniques, and multimedia production (e.g., audio and/or video production).
  • Familiarity with HTML and CSS.
