Job description

This Systems Designer role is within the Special Projects Information Systems and Networks (SPISN) in house Design Authority who are responsible for the solution design and design assurance for a medium sized on-premise IT system. The SPISN Delivery Team is an exciting, fast moving through-life delivery team responsible for the design, acquisition and support of the principal command and control C4IS of the Specialist User community.

The successful candidate’s daily duties will vary depending on skills and previous experience of the individual but may include the design of solution architectures, emerging technology research and converting user requirements into novel solutions. The Design Authority team is around 8 Civil Servants with additional contracted resource, SPISN as a team is around 50 people.

Responsibilities

This role presents an opportunity to work on a fast paced and exiting project and engage directly with the user community.

You will be responsible for;

• Apply architectural designs, gathering valuable business insights and work collaboratively with senior colleagues to help shape solutions.
• Apply policy, procedures and standards to documentation and delivery system designs.
• Adopt continuous improvement principles, whilst applying policies and documenting changes.
• Grow technical knowledge to ensure IT solutions exploit the full advantages of the functionality available.
• Grow stakeholder network across the business to support the delivery of IT change.
• Grow knowledge of data handling, modelling techniques and security protocols to delivery more robust system designs.
• Research and study emerging technologies and the IT landscape for future designs.
• Identify risks and issues involved in implementing Systems Designs.
• Be an active part of the Architectural community, attend meetings and participate in working groups.

What you will be assessed against

To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

• 5 GCSEs at grade C or above and A Levels or equivalent (e.g. HND)
• Previous ICT skills or experience gained from work experience or through education in ICT
• Good communication in both verbal and written with and the ability to empathise and communicate with users of all abilities.

It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

• ICT qualifications from a professional body (e.g. CompTIA)
• Experience of working within an ICT project, delivering on premise IT systems.
• Cyber Security Awareness
• Cloud – AWS or Azure experience / qualifications
• Good overall knowledge of MS Office applications, Windows Server and Linux
