An exciting opportunity exists within DE&S Maritime Combat Systems as the Chief Engineer (Command Systems).

As part of a wider multi-disciplinary Fleet Wide Combat Management Systems Delivery Team, you will be Head of Delivery Management chain for circa 10 staff, providing effective engineering and safety Leadership for a wide range of Combat System equipment and networks across most of the Royal Navy Surface Fleet delivering affordable, safe and available Combat Systems.

You will also be managing the engineering elements and outputs of a multi-million pound contract as well as defining the scope of the replacement contracting vehicle.
This is a Safety Responsible post, which means you must be demonstrably competent to provide authoritative advice on equipment safety issues.

On appointment to the position, you will be required to undergo an assessment in order to be judged competent to hold the Safety Responsible delegation. A formal safety training pathway exists to support your development, but evidence of your prior safety responsibilities, or holding a previous safety delegation is necessary in your application as an indicator of ability to hold this letter of delegation.

Our Fleet Wide Combat Management Systems Chief Engineer will have a strong background in Electronics, Software & Networks; Ship safety Management; Air Integration experience & Air integration experience including regulatory requirements; CMS Integration experience; Maritime In-Service processes and software configuration change management.

Due to the nature of the projects involved, this position is open to SOLE UK Nationals only.

Responsibilities

Your main responsibilities will include:
• Lead the team engineering contribution for the Queen Elizabeth Class Combat Management System (CMS), Air Traffic Control system and the on-board networks (Internal Network Electronics). As Chief Engineer you will be at the heart of a pivotal time in the development of the Carrier CMS capability, managing packages of changes requiring software and hardware updates whilst ensuring the systems remain safe, secure and available.
• The Chief Engineer is responsible for developing and authorising safety documentation that demonstrates the safety of CMS equipment and systems on Royal Naval Ships, demonstrating moral and statutory accountability and upholding the DE&S safety principles to protect our service personnel.
• Leading a diverse team, your assignment will cover a wide range of responsibilities including ratifying engineering changes, delivering the contracted programme schedules and producing sign off on Certificates of Clearance for Use. This will require working closely with Navy Command, contractors and equipment authorities.
• Delivery to service and Fleet role out of the new and high-profile Oceanographic Reconnaissance Combat Architecture on Mine Warfare vessels, delivering open systems architecture for future exploitation.
• You will directly influence how CMS evolves within the Royal Navy to become a software-driven application along with the rollout of Shared Infrastructure, working closely with the customer and other key stakeholders, enabling a significant step change in delivery of future technology for the Royal Navy.
• Provide ongoing expert Engineering Support for a range of obsolescent Master Equipment.
• Roll out of Shared Infrastructure to T45 Platform

What you will be assessed against

To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:
• Wide-ranging depth and breadth of technical experience in own specialism with knowledge and application of Systems Engineering approaches and experience of integrating technically complex systems
• Experience of writing and/or authorising safety artefacts such as safety and environmental case reports, with experience of leading or conducting safety/risk assessments.
• Extensive evidence of providing governance, assurance and advice on complex projects & portfolios in the applicant’s own area of expertise to guide and influence senior leaders and decision makers
• Relevant Level 6 (or higher) Science or Engineering qualification or equivalent experience within an engineering environment / industry
• Registration with a relevant Professional Engineering / Science Institute or equivalent body as an Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer – or, be suitably qualified and experienced to achieve this within 12 months
