Job Description

Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the nation, is seeking a passionate, dedicated professional to join our communications team as a Deputy Press Secretary. This role will support storytelling around Everytown’s student-focused grassroots network, Students Demand Action. The role will also support Everytown’s research and policy work and ongoing advocacy efforts.

In this role you will:

  • Support the development of the Students Demand Action brand
  • Build and manage relationships with media and serve as their primary liaison to Students Demand Action and student leaders across the country
  • Generate creative and timely story ideas and pitch them to reporters on a regular and proactive basis
  • Support rapid response and both reactive and proactive media strategies around Everytown’s issue areas and advocacy
  • Conduct media trainings and prepare both student leaders and organizational spokespeople for interviews and press events
  • Elevate Everytown’s research and integrate it into organizational storytelling

You should have:

  • 2+ years of communications experience, ideally including advocacy or campaign experience
  • Exceptional writing ability with the ability to create dynamic, persuasive communications materials – including press releases, talking points, op-eds, remarks, briefing materials, and more
  • The ideal candidate will have an interest in proactively building the profile of leaders, especially student leaders, in the gun violence prevention movement and pitching day-to-day stories, as well as building long-term narratives
  • Interest in politics and advocacy on a national, state, local, and grassroots level
  • Interest in working with volunteers and preparing them for media opportunities
  • Willingness to work with a growing team in a fast-paced, campaign-like environment (including sometimes unpredictable hours and crisis situations)
  • While not required, prior knowledge of gun violence prevention issues is a plus
  • Bilingual candidates, particularly those with oral and written fluency in Spanish, will be strongly considered
  • Position is based in Washington, D.C. or New York City, with a hybrid work schedule

The salary range for this position is $62,500 to $70,000 per year. Everytown offers a generous benefits package including Medical, Dental and Vision, 20 paid vacation days and 10 sick days per year, 401K, Education Assistance and more.

The Organization:

Everytown is the largest gun violence prevention organization in the nation with nearly ten million supporters, including parents, students, survivors, educators, gun owners, and Americans fighting for common sense gun safety. At the core of Everytown is Moms Demand Action, a grassroots movement of American mothers founded the day after the Sandy Hook tragedy, and Students Demand Action.
