Job Description

Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the nation, is seeking a passionate, dedicated professional to join our communications team as Deputy Press Secretary, focused on federal legislative affairs and combating misinformation put forward by anti-gun safety groups. The role will also support the work of our 2022 midterm election efforts.

In this role you will:

  • Take the lead on the development of messaging and both short-term and long-term communications plans for independent expenditure and key federal legislative campaigns
  • Act as the primary point of contact for congressional offices for day-to-day communications needs
  • Field media inquiries and pitch stories
  • Build and execute communications strategies
  • Manage projects under tight deadlines
  • Foster one-on-one relationships with journalists, especially national reporters.

Strong project management, organizational, and writing skills are required. Job candidates should feel comfortable learning and explaining complex policy positions to reporters and frequently drafting quotes, statements, and releases.

You should have:

  • 2+ years of communications experience, ideally on Capitol Hill or on campaigns
  • Interest in politics, policy, and advocacy on both a national and campaign level
  • Willingness to work with a growing team in a fast-paced, campaign-like environment (including sometimes unpredictable hours and crisis situations)
  • Exceptional writing skills, with the ability to create dynamic, persuasive communications materials – including press releases, talking points, op-eds, remarks, briefing materials, and more
  • The ideal candidate will have an interest in proactively building the profile of leaders in the gun violence prevention movement and pitching day-to-day stories, as well as building long-term narratives
  • While not required, knowledge of gun violence prevention issues is a plus
  • Bilingual candidates, especially candidates with both verbal and written fluency in Spanish, will be strongly considered
  • Position is based in Washington, D.C. with a hybrid work schedule

The salary range for this position is $62,500 to $70,000 per year. Everytown offers a generous benefits package including Medical, Dental and Vision, 20 paid vacation days and 10 sick days per year, 401K, Education Assistance and more.
