The Government of Nunavut is seeking a Deputy Minister with a health focus who, working closely with the Minister and in alignment with the Department’s vision will play a key role in delivering its mission.

This key Deputy Minister role leads all Healthcare for the Territory and will have a focus on increasing access to Inuit-specific mental health programs and services and more Inuit employed in delivering healthcare. You will create enduring partnerships with Inuit organizations, the non-profit sector, and other levels of government to improve health and mental health programs, services, and outcomes for Nunavummiut.

Engaging Elders and other community members, you will work towards the implementation of trauma-informed practices in healthcare, the creation of support models of wellness and well-being that are grounded in Inuit identity, and expand opportunities, training, and formal recognition for Inuit to provide culturally and linguistically relevant mental health and wellbeing programs and services.

Guided by the values of service excellence, sustainability, and corporate excellence, you will support the Minister in fulfilling their collective and individual ministerial responsibilities as well as in their accountability to Cabinet. More specifically, they will count on you for strategic planning, providing leadership in the development of policy and legislation, communications, budget coordination, capital planning, financial services, human resource development, and system support. Leadership and coordination in the areas of regional service delivery, and overall departmental quality assurance are also key functions of the Branch.

As the new DM, you will provide direction and leadership regarding the core functions of public health. You will impact the lives and well-being of residents in communities throughout Nunavut with strategies and approaches that combine education and skill building, social policy, inter-sectoral partnership and collaboration, regulation, community development, and the support of effective clinical preventive interventions.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned executive with experience managing people and processes in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment. You will be a savvy leader who can interpret and apply legislation such as the Medical Profession Act, the Public Health Act and the Medical Care Act, and ensure the establishment and maintenance of professional standards and best practices, while advocating for the preservation and improvement of the health of Nunavummiut. You will also possess a distinguished record of accomplishment in executive leadership and public sector stewardship within the health sector.

Both a strategic thinker and a service-focused leader of change, you will model and instill citizen-focused service while working to create a multi-lingual, inclusive, and diverse culture, encourage debate and ideas from staff and stakeholders at all levels, and bring resolution to problems and emerging issues in a sometimes-ambiguous environment of competing interests and priorities. As Deputy Minister of this high-profile department, you will work closely to develop stronger relationships with communities and community agencies, ensure that funding is in place to deliver on key government and community priorities, and work collaboratively with other GN departments to share knowledge and best practices.
