Job Description

The Democracy Collaborative Foundation [democracycollaborative.org], a national research and development lab for the democratic economy, seeks a director of communications to lead the crafting and dissemination of our research and analysis on the need for systemic solutions to our economic, racial, and climate crises, and to tell the stories that highlight alternative models of ownership and control of the economy.

This full-time position will report to the president of The Democracy Collaborative and work closely across our teams of researchers, fellows, and community wealth builders working on visions, models, and pathways toward an equitable, reparative, and democratic economy.

Duties and responsibilities

Your principal duties and responsibilities as director of communications include but are not limited to:

  • providing oversight and strategic direction for all communications activities of TDC, in particular,
    • developing and sharpening TDC’s story as a transformation agent and of how its various activities fit into a coherent whole
    • ensuring that TDC’s published material meets the highest editorial standards, conforms to TDC’s style and voice, reflects our values of inclusion and representation, is up to date, easily accessible, and appropriately promoted
    • making TDC’s work prominent in the policy discussions and activist campaigns that are important to the organization’s mission of advancing a democratic economy, empowered by a “comms-first” culture that enables front-end shaping of initiatives for maximum communications impact
    • representing TDC and its work in the media, with allies, and to the general public, and supporting other TDC staff in crafting and representing their work
    • partnering with social movements, think tanks, academics, and elected officials to promote systemic change, and to elevate untold stories and marginalized voices to advance that change
    • leading TDC in making effective use of both traditional and new communications methods and platforms in disseminating its message, including social media, videos, and podcasts
    • managing staff and consultants needed to complete day-to-day communications work
    • leading the execution of rapid-response and crisis communications plans
    • expanding the number of people formally engaged with TDC’s work (through email subscriptions, social media followings, and other commitments)
    • helping to lead the development of a culture of community, integrity, communication, reflection, equity, balance, and ambition, as detailed in our “Statement of Values”

We are looking for candidates who

  • understand and are in alignment with The Democracy Collaborative’s mission of advancing a democratic economy as a systemic alternative to our current system, and its values of community, integrity, communication, reflection, equity, balance, and ambition.
  • are specifically interested in developing effective messaging and communications products that center racial justice and justice for all marginalized groups
  • have a strong familiarity with key debates around heterodox political economies and alternative economic institutions
  • understand the power of ideas to inspire movements and the need to work in deep partnership with those movements to turn ideas for system change into reality

The skills and qualifications we are looking for include:

  • More than five years of communications-related experience, including significant experience working in or writing for print or online publications on politics or public policy issues
  • exceptional skill and dexterity as a writer, editor, speaker, and strategic communicator, capable of quickly and effectively conveying complex, radical and system-changing ideas in clear, engaging, and convincing ways to diverse sets of stakeholders and supporters
  • demonstrated ability to cultivate relationships with media people who can amplify our work and make our staff a go-to source for information and ideas on systemic change
  • experience with graphic design, content management, and social media management, and can work closely with and learn from people who can translate our messaging into visual mediums
  • significant experience as a manager of projects and of people, with a facility for discovering ways to help colleagues work efficiently and collaboratively and an ability to smartly juggle competing deadlines and priorities
  • demonstrated capacity to lead in embedding principles of racial equity and inclusion and equity for other historically marginalized people, within the communications department and across the organization
  • knowing how to assess communications impact and use those assessments to adjust communications strategies and to advise broader shifts within the organization
  • the capacity to be self-directed and highly productive in a virtual organization, while actively creating an environment of collaboration and conviviality
