Full-Time Dean of Students

Job Description

Contribution to institutional administration and Student Affairs Values 
The Dean of Students will reflect the institutional mission and values in policy development and implementation, institutional relationships, and program administration. Collaborates with other parts of the university to ensure availability of services to avoid duplication of services. Serves on relevant University committees and task forces and seeks out opportunities to ensure Student Affairs is represented across campus and in our field.

Leadership and Representation in the Student Affairs Division and Institution

The Dean of Students will actively engage in wide-ranging short term and long-term decision-making and planning in collaboration with the rest of the Student Affairs Senior Leadership Team. They participate fully in all discussions and represent their areas as well as divisional culture, vision, mission, values and outcomes.
In addition, the Dean of Students will be an active and engaged member of the university community through attendance at events and meetings and will be known to faculty, staff, and students. They should seek out opportunities to interact with our students regularly and build rapport and trust with the student community. They will also be expected to maintain involvement and participation in their relevant national and local organizations, conferences, and events.

Crisis Response

The Dean of Students will work in collaboration with the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Associate Vice President for Student Life and involvement for Student Affairs response to major crises (Campus Emergencies, student death, and critical incidents) impacting students within the University community. Provide direction, intervention, and serve as an advocate for these students in crisis and when needed involve partners including mental health staff, victim advocacy, and additional staff working with student(s) affected by crisis. Monitor incidents to make sure adequate support continues after the initial incident is resolved.

Campus Retention Leader

Utilizes current literature and research as well as campus and external partners to identify risks to retention broadly and for individual students. Develops initiatives and outreach strategies focused on the retention of JMU students based in this research.  Supports students through the process of withdrawal if necessary and develops plans for their eventual return to the JMU community if appropriate.

Collaboration with Campus Partners

The Dean of Students will develop key collaborative relationships with campus administrative areas, faculty and staff, parents, and community leaders to serve as a resource when supporting students.  Specific focus on partnering with Academic Affairs in regard to managing student absence protocol and notifications.

Committee Leadership

The Dean of Students will chair the student Behavioral Assessment Team and chair and/or participate in other committees as assigned (e.g.: Violence Prevention Team, Emergency Response and Recovery Team, etc.).  The Dean of Students will have a leadership role with the Suicide Risk Reduction Task Force as well as the current QEP process.

Supervision

The Dean of Students will supervise the Associate Dean of Students and Executive Assistant while providing support to the Dean of Students team and their areas of collaboration, outreach, and support.  Maintain staffing and organizational structure to effectively accomplish department function and divisional mission, vision, and values.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Dean of Students will uplift Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in their daily work and within their area. Centers their work around the concepts of universal design and accessibility for all students and sets clear and high expectations for all services, events, and programming.  Reinforces and supports the need for all staff members to fully engage in Social Justice training and educational opportunities as part of their professional development.
