Your role

We are looking for a Producer to work with various teams within CBC News Network including both weekdays and weekends. The current work week for this position is a compressed schedule, Thursday to Sunday.
This position requires someone who is an editorial leader who will coordinate editorial coverage for CBC News Network in Toronto.

You plan, conceive, organize, and/or develop the production and realization of program segments. You are a strong team player and work closely with the Executive Producer, Senior Producer, Host, Rundown Producer, and Associate Producers. In addition, you take an interest in the overall content, texture and production values of the program, from assignment through program presentation.

Your work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, standards and practices and you are ultimately responsible for ensuring that this occurs.

There is wide latitude for initiative, independent judgement and creativity.

Key Tasks:
Liaise with assignment regarding CBC coverage of stories.
Help determine stories and treatments.
Chase, organize and supervise interview segments.
Vet interviews before air with attention to focus, questions, on-screen banners, visuals, and other production elements.
Write news stories, create graphical elements, and edit video for television and/or digital.
Pitch story and segment ideas and treatments.
Contribute to determining the style, pace, tempo, line-up and format of the program.
Contribute to the overall editorial strategies of CBC News Network.
Exercise editorial responsibility as delegated by Management.
Communicate effectively and cooperatively.
Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment.
Open to new ideas and approaches.
Ability to mentor junior members of the team and the newsroom.
Helps guide and support more junior staff through times of change.
Ensure content adheres to CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:
Five years’ experience of which three must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry, which is directly related to the area of assignment.
Solid journalistic skills, with highly developed vetting skills.
Highly developed analytical skills and the ability to make complex stories and issues easily understood.
Highly developed production skills, including strong ability to produce for a variety of program formats.
Experience using production tools such as DTV, VIzrt, iNews automated lineups, and Media Central.
Experience working in an automated control room.
Leadership skills.
A thorough understanding of CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices and their practical implementation.
Ability to communicate effectively and cooperatively.
Self-motivated, with highly developed interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment.
Open to new ideas and approaches.
Demonstrated knowledge of political, cultural, social, economic and legal issues, as well as National and International issues.
Familiarity with CBC Radio & Television Programming and CBC.ca, with the ability to work across departments and platforms.
Ability to work overtime, early mornings, evenings, weekends and/or holidays, when required.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
