SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in Washington State, that provides students with the latest cutting edge skills relevant to today’s workplace. LWTech offers ten applied bachelor’s degrees, more than 40 associate degrees and 93 professional certificates, in 43 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

LWTech serves the Eastside and is located within the city of Kirkland, which is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Washington. Kirkland is home to companies such as GoDaddy, Google, Astronics and EvergreenHealth, and the college is within minutes from Microsoft and Nintendo.

The coordinator plans, develops, directs, and evaluates activities that support LWTech’s diverse student veteran, military dependent, and active duty students. This position is the designated point of contact for academic advising and community building for veteran students. Activities include: managing all activities associated with LWTech’s Center for Student Veteran Success; offering weekly and quarterly orientation experiences, offering advising appointments for students associated with the Center; partnering with student service departments in offering Veteran, military dependent, or active duty resources and support activities; facilitating support services for students between the Center and Financial Aid; developing and implementing events and activities to build an inclusive student community; and assessing or evaluating activities as necessary to collect data for service improvement. This is an exempt, contract administration position that works under general and infrequent supervision and reports to the Director of Student Programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Manage all resources and services offered by the Center for Student Veteran Success with limited supervision and direction, including advertising the Center, restocking print materials, editing social media, editing Center focused webpages, and administer computer station usage and social spaces.

• Partner with college departments to offer learning experiences for Center students focused on advising, financial aid, employment, student academic success, community building, and mental health.

• Supervise student employees to create and implement events and activities within the center focused on community building, military to civilian transitioning, socialization, and serving underserved military students.

• Connect to local military bases and community-based organizations to advertise the Center for Veteran Student Success opportunities, especially for underserved populations.

• Serve as the advisor to the Student Veteran Club.

• Participate in orientation and graduation events to support Veteran student involvement. Offer intensive academic support for veteran, military dependent, and active duty students including:

• Offering individual or group advising appointments, ensuring successful navigation of college services related to enrollment, persistence, graduation, employment, or transfer.

• Assist students in navigating prior learning assessment.

• Utilize the Academic Early Warning system to identify veterans who may struggle academically.

• Refer Veterans, military dependents, and active duty personnel, to academic support services offered throughout the college

• Using case management strategies, monitor student progress from quarter to quarter and personally contact students who withdraw from classes or do not register for the next quarter.

• Ensure each veteran has an academic plan on file with clearly identified academic goals.

• Assist Center connected students in scaffolding educational goals when possible (completion of certificates, where possible, while in progress towards an associate or bachelor’s degree).

• Assist students with initial veteran benefit paperwork and navigating college systems to ensure compliance with veteran regulations; works in tandem with the school certifying official

• Be an informed and inclusive resource for college departments and employees needing to navigate supporting veterans, military dependents, or active duty students.

• Effectively use data to prepare reports as necessary and make data informed decision to improve services from quarter to quarter or year to year. Supervise and train assigned student and/or classified support staff;

• Participate in minimal travel for conferences or training; Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to provide quality services to students and apply communication techniques to work effectively with various college populations

• Ability to work effectively within a team office environment and with a high level of anti- racism awareness;

• Three or more years direct working experience with veterans’ or military programs and populations;

• Demonstrated customer service, verbal, and written communication skills; Demonstrated skills in self-initiative and follow through;

• Demonstrated ability to present workshops and training, and public speaking. Demonstrated ability to use data to build reports and create data informed decisions for improvement;

• Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks, often with competing deadlines;

• Computer skills using MS Office software, including Word and Excel;

• To best serve the diverse student populations on campus, multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply;

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of relevant lived and employment experience

Preferred:

• All minimum qualifications, and the following:

• Master’s Degree in education, organizational development, social services, counseling, or similar program demonstrating proficiency with job duties;

• Experience working in a community or technical college environment; Case management experience through social services;

• Developing and implement training workshops for students and organization employees focused on anti-racism, inclusion, and equity.

Demonstrated knowledge of the following:

• Transitioning experiences from military to civilian life;

• Organizational systems focused on student success;

• Serving underserved military populations like women, Black, Indigenous, People of Color, trauma-based populations, and the military disabled.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Compensation & Work Schedule

Salary is $5,208 per month. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position. Typically, work hours are Monday-Friday from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
