Position Overview
The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Cook I for the Alton Mental Health Center located in Alton, Illinois to prepare and cooks on a quantity scale basis. Assumes responsibility for the section of the meal preparation assigned. Batch cooks according to policies and procedures. Operates standard cooking equipment. Assists in the training of other dietary staff to cook in emergencies. Cleans equipment and work area to maintain sanitation, safety, and conditions.
Job Responsibilities
1. Prepares and cooks on a quantity scale basis for the Alton Mental Health Center.
2. Operates standard cooking equipment such as mixing machines, steam cookers, toasters, food choppers, bake ovens and steam kettles.
3. Assists in the inspection of the kitchen to verify the kitchen is equipped with the necessary supplies and needed food.
4. Cleans equipment and work area to maintain sanitation, safety, and conditions.
5. Serves as back-up for the food service line with food/batch cook required food items.
6. Completes all Department of Human Services (DHS) and facility mandatory training requirements and participates in educational workshops to maintain professionalism and competency.
7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school and six months of cooking experience which provides a working knowledge of food preparation and cooking methods on a large-scale basis.
2. Requires possession of a valid Food Service Sanitation Certificate issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health or requires possession of a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification from a program accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Conference for Food Protection (CFP).
•      Qualifying state employees in the Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency instead of the stated education and experience requirements for this class.
Conditions of Employment
1. Requires ability to instruct and direct others in the various areas of food preparation and the sanitation of kitchen work areas.
2. Requires the ability to estimate the number of food items and kitchen supplies needed.
3. Requires the ability to pass the IDHS background check.
4. Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
5. Requires ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.
