Job Description

Community Outreach Coordinator, Learning Team

Full-time, Non-exempt

About The Tech

The Tech Interactive is a family-friendly science and technology center in the heart of downtown San Jose. Our hands-on activities, experimental labs and design challenge experiences empower people to innovate with creativity, curiosity and compassion. The Tech is a world leader in the creation of immersive STEAM education resources to develop the next generation of problem-solvers locally, nationally and globally. We believe that everyone is born an innovator who can change the world for the better.

Our success is dependent on building teams that include people from different backgrounds and experiences who challenge each other’s assumptions with fresh perspectives. To that end, we look for a diverse pool of applicants including but not limited to those from historically marginalized groups — women, people with disabilities, people of color, people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or nonconforming, veterans, and people from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Role

The Community Outreach Coordinator is a non-exempt (hourly) position reporting to the Senior Director of Inclusive Research, Development, and Impact, with some tasks that support programs across the Learning team. The position focuses on communication with schools, community partner organizations, and the families and individuals served by both. The Community Coordinator’s primary role is to connect partner organizations serving communities with traditionally limited access to STEM resources to the resources of the Tech, and to integrate members of those organizations and communities with opportunities to inform the Tech’s work by participating in community co-design and feedback activities.

The Tech requires candidates to pass a background screening and provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination as conditions of employment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact and connector for community partners in the Inclusive Research, Design, and Impact Measurement team’s community listening and co-design efforts.
  • Participate in community listening, co-design, and other embedded activities within the community to cultivate strong relationships and trust between The Tech and its surrounding communities.
  • Coordinate logistics for community listening and co-design sessions.
  • Coordinate the work with interpreters and translators for live meetings and for written communications with community audiences.
  • Actively work with school Link Services, community partners, and schools to raise awareness of the Museums for All access program, free field trips for Title 1 schools, and other resources intended to increase access to opportunities to support young people engaging in STEM learning and career development.
  • Collaborate with Tech Academies Coordinator and the Tech Challenge Program Manager to get consistent messages out to those program partner schools and assist in their recruiting efforts.
  • Serve as the primary communicator for schools participating in school programs at the Tech, including getting pre-program materials to educators, tracking travel reimbursement applications, and answering questions.
  • Serve as a Learning Team expert in the use of Tessitura (the Tech’s primary ticketing and customer data management system) and support the effective use of Tessitura by Inclusive R&D and Facilitated Experiences, by generating reports and synchronizing data with impact reporting and tracking systems.
  • Support purchasing, invoicing, and related processes, including placing and tracking orders, logging receipts, tracking expenses, and inputting into finance tracking systems.
  • Complete assigned multi-day projects that support the Learning team objectives.
  • Represent The Tech Interactive at functions as assigned.
  • Other administrative and clerical duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications:

  • Two+ years of community outreach/liaison experience – including communicating both with community based organizations and directly with families served by those organizations.
  • Experience coordinating work with contracted interpreters/translators – for both live events and in written communication.
  • Ability to speak a second language, preferably Spanish or Vietnamese.
  • Computer proficient with the ability to independently create, manipulate and alter spreadsheets, presentation slides and other reports along with a willingness to learn new programs. Experience with Tessitura, or similar database and/or contact resource management systems, a plus.
  • Flexible work style that can handle last-minute details and requests calmly and efficiently.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
  • Proven organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and calendar scheduling with collaborative project tracking systems.
  • Proven ability to work independently and function as a part of a collaborative team.
  • Excellent communication skills, including phone, verbal and written. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals with varying communication styles.
  • Ability to work with confidential materials and documents.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of staff and volunteers, and a commitment to upholding an inclusive culture.
  • Available full-time mostly Monday through Friday but may be replaced by some weekend days and some evenings to accommodate organization operational needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
