Organizational Description: 

Friends of Ruby provides comprehensive and progressive support to LGBTQI2S youth, aged 16-29, well-being through housing and social services.

Friends of Ruby operates a counselling and drop-in centre and soon to be open, the Friends of Ruby’s Home, a major new initiative which is well underway. The Home will provide transitional and emergency housing, as well as mental health and wellness support services, dedicated to serving homeless LGBTQI2S Youth, aged 16 to 29.

 

Job Description: 

The Communications Coordinator joins an existing Strategic Initiatives & Social Enterprise team and is responsible for assisting with the development, branding, and maintenance of high-quality design and content for Friends of Ruby’s various online and print communication vehicles.

This position is central to the success of Friends of Ruby and is an exciting opportunity to help shape Friends of Ruby communication strategy and to collaboratively implement the organization’s marketing initiatives. The communications coordinator will assist in the management of all communications channels and help develop and share our brand, image and impact.

The successful candidate will contribute graphic design, multimedia and social media expertise to  plans and discussions, and will also help with the various aspects of publications, content, design, marketing materials, grant proposals, websites and e-communications.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Completes design, layout and content creation for Friends of Ruby’s print and educational materials, including brochures, one-pagers, presentations, proposals, reports, cases-for-support, toolkits, newsletters, annual report and other.
  • Completes design, layout and content creation for Friends of Ruby’s virtual materials, including infographics, videos, posts, and other.
  • Completes design, layout and content creation for raising awareness of Friends of Ruby’s programs and services to youth and community partners, including emails, posters, flyers, posts, sms, displays, banners, and other.
  • Helps create content for and maintain Friends of Ruby’s website, including writing and editing text copy, preparing graphics, creating new pages, and updating content where necessary.
  • Assists in managing Friends of Ruby’s social media presence, including heloing to create, schedule and deploy social posts, engage with followers, and  contribute to  project- and event-specific social media plans.
  • Supporting Friends of Ruby through the creation of event communications, including invitations, speeches, signage, event programs, photography, and live social media coverage.
  • Liaises with internal and external stakeholders to gather relevant and accurate content for the creation of compelling communication materials.
  • Ensures clear, consistent messaging across relevant communication materials.
  • Helps coordinate work from external communications agencies and suppliers.
  • Liaises with internal and external stakeholders to approve design, layout, content, printing or publishing of materials.
  • Meet with leadership to identify and develop success and compelling stories, opportunities for commentary on topical issues, features and profiles – and activate use in media relations and marketing/communications materials.
  • Assist with the development of the Annual Report.
  • Assists the Development Manager in meeting deadlines for projects that may fall outside primary job responsibilities and providing support with Grant proposals.

 

Requirements: 

  • Familiarity with the LGBTQI2S community and LGBTQI2S human rights more generally.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as communications, marketing, public relations, or business.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of related professional experience.
  • Experience with developing various types of communication and promotional materials.
  • Skilled in Adobe Creative Suite (i.e., Photoshop and InDesign) or similar, Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint), content management systems (i.e., WordPress, SharePoint), email marketing platforms (i.e., MailChimp, Luminate Online), and other online software (i.e., Asana, Trello, Canva, SmartDraw).
  • Basic understanding of photography and videography, as well as editing and publishing software (i.e., Final Cut Pro, Wondershare)
  • Highly developed writing and editing skills in both print and electronic media, and experience in creating compelling written communications.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with an ability to communicate clearly with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Knowledge and experience with web-based technologies and social media channels (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, YouTube) and using social media management platforms (i.e., Hootsuite, Buffer)

 

Additional requirements 

  • Satisfactory clearance under the Police Records Check Program;
  • Must be qualified to legally work in Canada
  • Willing to work at a flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of the organization
  • Ability to travel to other community-based settings as needed, ability to work from home and from the office located in Downtown Toronto

 

Hours and reporting: 

The Communication Coordinator will report to the Strategic Initiatives & Social Enterprise Manager.

You will work Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
