POSITION SUMMARY:This position provides advanced support work in the Public Services department of Memorial Library and is responsible for the general management of the library during night and weekend hours. This position oversees the security and general functioning of the library, responding to security and emergency situations and managing circulation services, and exercising good judgement in the application of policies and procedures.

This position also provides information services (chat, email, phone), assists in the planning and implementation of operational policies and procedures and trains, schedules and oversees student hourly employees. This position requires a high degree of organization, ability to multi-task, ability to work independently on multiple projects, and a focus on details. This individual must work effectively as a team member and be comfortable with some task ambiguity, as work demands fluctuate.

MINIMUM YEARS AND TYPE OF RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE:Physical Requirements:
– Ability to occasionally lift 50 pounds
– Ability to work on a computer for 6+ hours
– Ability to move around a large building with or without an accommodationRequired Skills:
– Ability to demonstrate strong customer service skills
– Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as knowledge of basic computer skills (including knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications)Preferred Skills:
-Experience working in a library setting
– Experience with or knowledge of circulation functions (checkout, return,
recall, hold, etc)
– Experience overseeing or directing the work of staff
– Experience in planning, developing, and application of policies and
procedures.
– Ability to work independently and with a team
– Ability to be flexible, pay close attention to detail and respond well to
multiple competing demands
– Ability to analyze problems and suggest solutions
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:Knowledge and Skills:
1. Ability to establish and maintain effective lead worker relationships with other
employees.
2. Ability to represent the library to the public in a positive, helpful manner.
3. Ability to reorganize workload of the department to meet changed
circumstances.
4. Ability to handle security problems with diplomacy and emergencies in a safe
and efficient manner.
5. Ability to learn Circulation policy and procedure, including building access and
borrowing privileges, and an understanding of when exceptions are appropriate.
6. Ability to learn the record structure for monographs and serials (bibliographic
records, volume holdings, order record, etc).
7. Knowledge of circulation functions (checkout, return, recall, hold, etc).
8. Ability to learn record creation functions (item records, etc.)
9. Ability to learn call number systems used by the library (Library of Congress,
Cutter).
10. Ability to learn general library services and locations.
11. Ability to abide by departmental procedures in event of medical and building
emergencies, equipment failures, criminal activity.
12. Knowledge of computer application (Word, Excel, Office 365, etc.).
13. Ability to communicate effectively in written as well as oral form.
14. Good public service skills in dealing with both our internal and external
customers.
