About the Opportunity:

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will be responsible for ensuring the ongoing growth and success of The Center’s fundraising, ensuring we continue to reach – and exceed – our annual revenue goal (FY22 budget is  $11MM, including $6MM in private contributions and $5MM in government grants). The incoming CDO will be focused on building and managing a portfolio of high-level donors and on our continued evolution as we strive to reach more inclusive fundraising opportunities and engage and activate new major donors. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the CDO will be responsible for overseeing a development team that is passionate about the work and bring an orientation toward the growth and development of these high potential leaders. Finally, the CDO will bring an energetic passion for the mission of The Center along with strong organizational leadership skills. This leader will assure the necessary systems, structures, and processes are in place to support the exciting growth taking place within the organization.

Areas of Leadership:

Fundraising Strategy and Execution:

  • Build, establish, and maintain relationships with major donors and institutions in order to motivate, inspire, and secure donations to the Center.
  • Envision, lead, and implement a multiyear development strategy that is intentionally inclusive, comprehensive, innovative, and far-reaching, aligned to The Center’s strategic plan, and contains measurable goals.
  • Own, develop, and cultivate a new, demographically diverse, more expansive donor base while deepening relationships with existing donors.
  • Plan and execute fundraising events and campaigns.
  • Obtain input from members of The Center’s constituency to ensure all types of fundraising efforts and outreach reflect and/or incorporate the community’s diverse voices, identities, and experiences.

Executive Leadership:

  • Partner and collaborate with all members of the Executive Team, ensuring that the Development team is a trusted collaborator with members of all teams across the organization, acting as a force multiplier to amplify the work and impact of the organization.
  • Serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, responsible for all fundraising and development function activities. Partner with other senior leaders, Board members, and development staff to continue to grow The Center’s reach and impact.
  • Represent The Center externally, including with board members and major donors, in cultivating and securing significant gifts to the organization.

Team Leadership:

  • Advance equity and racial diversity within the development team.
  • Provide leadership, training, and support for the department, including directly managing and developing the development team, ensuring goals are met.
  • Establish a strong partnership model for how other teams will work with development to advance the organization’s goals.
  • Apply strong decision-making, innovative and creative thinking, and problem-solving skills to successfully diversify The Center’s donor-base and overall fundraising goals.

Required Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Mission & Values Alignment: Demonstrates a passion for, close involvement/experience with, and understanding of the LGBTQ Community’s issues and needs, including centering the voices of those who have been historically oppressed, and a contemporary analysis of structural racism and bias.
  • Fundraising Expertise: At least 10 years of experience managing relationships with diverse donor constituencies. Proven ability to cultivate high-performing portfolios that contribute to the organization’s growth and sustainability. Ability to successfully ask for multi-year, multi-million dollar gifts from diverse sources, including individuals and institutions. Experience partnering with other high-level fundraisers, particularly Board members, to build support for an organization. Familiarity with government funding is a strong plus.
  • Executive & Team Leadership Experience: Proven history of leading, inspiring, and developing cohesive and high functioning teams with diverse identities to effectively deliver outcomes while centering an organization’s mission. Track record of effective collaboration with other executive leaders. Experience setting and driving strategy at the organization level. Ability to manage up, down, and across an organization effectively, with and without formal authority.
  • Collaboration & Relationship Building: Demonstrated ability to cultivate, grow, and manage positive, mutually beneficial relationships at all levels of an organization. Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills, including the ability to identify and work through challenges, underscored by strong judgment and emotional intelligence. Proven collaborator, able to work with and through senior leadership teams, as well as across functions.

The Center’s Commitment to Equity & Inclusivity

The Center was born of community activism in response to the AIDS epidemic, ensuring a place for LGBTQ people to access information, care, and support that they were not receiving elsewhere. We opened in 1983 to help people who had doors constantly closed in their faces, ostracized by family, friends, and shunned by the general society. Since that time, we have continually provided a wide array of services and programs to serve our community, with an intentional focus on providing support to those who are most vulnerable. We have always taken great care to be a space that responds to community needs; engaging in diversity, equity, and inclusion work is another outgrowth of those ongoing efforts. We recognize that in order to help LGBTQ individuals and our diverse community achieve parity in health, justice, opportunity, and success outcomes, our organization must hold a strong foundation and competency in, as well as invest organizational focus on, equity and inclusion frameworks, practices and policies. This is also true in our hiring and retention of staff.
