Position Summary

United Way of Central Indiana recognizes that the key to success is a strong and cohesive team that works through shared values to achieve our mission. The Capacity Building Manager is responsible for various projects which include planning, scheduling and facilitating the delivery of professional development, support, evaluation and resources to the Central Indiana nonprofit community and the organization’s partners. Provide training and development services or broker such services from other professionals. Address specific training and development needs of UWCI partners and some UWCI volunteers.

 

Position Duties & Responsibilities

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.  They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Community and Capacity Building in the Impact Division, the Capacity Building Manager will manage and implement a variety of projects that support community-based organizations. Specific duties include:

  • Implement and oversee UWCI capacity building activities that provide training, technical assistance, networking opportunities and other supports for UWCI partners.
  • Respond to technical assistance inquiries from partners by assessing their needs, providing training and development that addresses the identified needs, brokering services of other consultants, or providing information and resources to assist the organizations.
  • Work with UWCI staff to measure and report on the impact of capacity building services.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with UWCI partner organizations and manage appropriate and meaningful correspondence through a variety of mediums.
  • Acquire and maintain a database of resources, nonprofit consultants, and subject matter experts to support partner organizations.
  • Manage special grant making programs to community-based organizations, as assigned.
  • Work cross functionally to ensure all initiatives are integrated across UWCI’s Basic Needs, Family Opportunity and Social Innovation strategies; and across UWCI’s goals for donors to Give, Advocate and Volunteer.
  • Assist the Senior Director of Community and Capacity Building with special projects associated with capacity building efforts at UWCI.
  • Performs special assignments and other work, on an as-needed basis.

 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Excellent project management and public relations skills required. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. The ability to effectively manage a multifaceted project in multiple environments is required.  Must have effective organizational and interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently, a talent for forming and maintaining external relationships, and an attitude toward achieving outcomes.  Initiative, detail and team orientation are essential.

 

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, business administration, public administration or related area with a focus on nonprofit management and/or governance required.  The ability to facilitate workshops, focus groups, task groups, etc., is required.  Proven experience with professional development and training, with a focus on adult learning, is a plus.  Must be competent in oral and written communications.  The ability to effectively participate in group planning and project implementation is required. Knowledge and understanding of nonprofit organizations are required.
