Job Title:                    Canine Socialization Assistant

FLSA Status:             Non-exempt, Non-Union; Part-time (20-25 hrs/wk)

Salary:                        $18.50 per hour

Who you are: You are a firm believer of humane treatment of all animals. You are eager to make a positive impact in lives of the sheltered dogs by increasing their adoption potential through one-on-one work, socializing, and exercising shelter dogs, as well as implementing training protocols. You work well in a fast-paced environment and have excellent customer service skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Implement behavior modification for selected shelter dogs on a daily basis
  • Maintain a positive, educational approach with a willingness to listen when dealing with the public, the staff and volunteers
  • Walk, socialize, and exercise assigned shelter dogs
  • Assist staff in running play groups for shelter dogs as assigned
  • Participate in the Enrichment program as assigned
  • Adhere to the department’s philosophy to only use positive reinforcement methods for training
  • Effectively manage emotionally charged situations with customers, volunteers and staff
  • Work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced and often emotionally challenging environment.
  • Actively collaborate with other departments when appropriate
  • May be assigned to other department tasks provided work with shelter dogs is complete. This could include working with shelter cats, responding to Animal Behavior Helpline calls or other department work.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Must have strong animal handling skills and above average ability to read dog behavior in order to comfortably handle large untrained dogs while maintaining the use of positive reinforcement methodologies. Formal behavior training or experience would be a plus. Ability to work well with and communicate effectively both orally and in writing with the public, staff and volunteers. Must be highly motivated toward the welfare and humane treatment of all animals. Upon hire, must successfully pass a background check.

Upon hire, must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and able to show COVID Vaccination Card as proof of vaccination.

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, volunteers, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to read and monitor dog and cat behavior. Must show maturity, good judgment, and professionalism. In addition, must be able to work efficiently under pressure. Also must demonstrate a friendly, open demeanor.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Chameleon Database software or become proficient within the probationary period (first six months from hire date.); Internet, MS Office Suite.
