Job Description

Clark College is currently accepting applications for a full-time, permanent classified Bookstore Buyer with a focus on course materials/textbooks. Hours for this position are Monday – Friday, 7:30am – 4:00pm, but can vary depending upon departmental needs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Initiate and direct the quarterly course material adoption cycle and purchase & return of textbooks.  Including: establishing timelines and processes for estimating quantities, determining material formats, making order decisions, selecting vendors, placing orders, and coordinating returns which result in effective overall department outcomes.

Communicate clearly and accurately with all college faculty and staff, bookstore staff, and vendors when identifying ordering needs, availability, trouble shooting, and problem solving. Work to build and maintain positive and productive relationships through demonstrated effective communication skills.

Manage and maintain inventory levels, achieve sales objectives, prevent overstock, meet customer demand for, and access to, required materials, identify slow and fast sellers, and determine and accomplish out of stock dates accordingly.

Establish merchandise plans including department layout, setting shelves and stocking merchandise based on product relations, customer access, and flow of merchandise to meet sales and service objectives.

Coordinate and direct part-time department staff including training, scheduling, and guiding and developing.

Plan, coordinate and facilitate department events and activities.

Establish and maintain a high level of customer service.

Seek, learn, understand, and employ various software solutions and tools to complete work processes.

Perform other related duties as assigned by direct supervisor or Bookstore Manager.

Position Requirements and Competencies:

Candidates will be evaluated based on application materials, including the supplemental questions and personal interview(s), and will be required to demonstrate competencies in the following areas:

Education and Experience:  Associate degree AND 2 years progressively responsible retail or purchasing experience with 6 months minimum supervisory OR equivalent education/experience.

Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (including MS Outlook, Word, and Excel) and internet navigation; willingness to learn and effectively utilize bookstore inventory control system and other applicable software solutions.

Communication Skills:  Excellent written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate with diverse groups and individuals.

Problem Solving/Creative and Innovative Thinking:  Develop and foster innovative ideas that provide solutions to all types of workplace challenges.

Organizational Skills:  Effectively coordinate activities, meet deadlines, and devise workflow schedules to ensure smooth and efficient workflow.

Customer Service Skills:  Excellent service skills which consistently meets or exceeds the needs of students, colleagues, and the public.

Leadership Skills:  Foster productive and professional relationships, guide staff, demonstrate effective leadership skills, actively participate on Bookstore Leadership team and with other college groups.

Vaccination requirement: Per Washington State Proclamation 21-14.1: college employees must be fully vaccinated. Your COVID-19 vaccine status must be validated by the Human Resources office prior to the commencement of work. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., bend, stoop, stand, kneel and/or sit for segments of two hours at a time.

Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule to meet demands of volatile quarterly schedules.

Ability to successfully complete and demonstrate proficiency of Store Systems trainings within 4 weeks from start date.

Ability to work well with people of all ages from academically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds.

The initial appointment will include a 6-month probationary period and the employee will earn permanent status after successfully completing probation.

This position is represented by Washington Public Employees Association.

Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.


Starting Salary: $2,999/month                         Range:  38                           Code:  230E
