Full-Time Associate Publicist

Job Description

The Associate Publicist will work in close cooperation with the Senior Publicist as a key member of the Communications team.  At various times they will work with the museum director and other MFAH colleagues to create and execute our publicity campaigns. The Associate Publicist will take initiative and accountability, bring energy and creativity, and know how to leverage various communications verticals, strategies and levers to deliver innovative and impactful campaigns.  Ideally, they will be skilled at developing, preparing and executing a wide range of campaigns, while working with the Senior Publicist and Head of Communications on large high priority campaigns. This is an opportunity to gain invaluable experience in the cultural arts space, regionally, nationally and internationally.

This role offers an amazing opportunity to build upon the Museum’s historic role in producing innovative exhibitions, publications and programs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Handles media planning and outreach for house museums as well as MFAH programs, social events and benefits, the Film program, plus smaller-scale exhibitions and other bi-annual events
  • Supports the Senior Publicist in a range of initiatives, including at exhibition media previews
  • Develops and implements local/regional media communications plans
  • Researches, drafts and circulates for approvals media alerts, and related materials and images
  • Consults and coordinates with departments across the museum to achieve media objectives for programs and initiatives
  • Develops and implements pitches
  • Coordinates and manages media requests, interviews and shoots
  • Oversees photo and/or TV shoots, coordinating with appropriate departments
  • Manages press at MFAH social events and benefits and creates advance face books
  • Tracks coverage

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must possess strong writing, communications and interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional project management skills, including organization, prioritization and communication
  • Takes initiative, problem-solver and follows through
  • Knowledgeable about trends, technology developments and innovations as they relate to publicity and social media, with a knack for identifying new opportunities and ideas
  • Persuasive communication for pitching and selling stories to broadcast, print, online and new media
  • Creative, resourceful, sociable, persuasive and ambitious personality
  • Positive attitude, which looks like someone who is more than just upbeat!  You are also versatile and adaptable
  • You have a good eye to spot a good story

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (English, Journalism, Communications or Art History) strongly preferred OR an equivalent combination of experience and education from which comparable and demonstrable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • 1-3 years of related experience (preferably in media relations, journalism and/or a cultural institution. )
  • Ability to speak Spanish a plus.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Work will be performed in varied and wide-ranging indoor and outdoor environments and conditions.  Physical demands will also vary.  Work may involve extended sitting and computer use. Evening and weekend work required including at events. Some local, regional, national travel may be required.

Regular attendance on campus required with intermittent telework options available.

Job Types: Full-Time. Salaries: 40,000 - 60,000.
