Your role

Country Checkup – Canada’s only national call-in show on CBC Radio ONE and CBC News Network. This position is based in Toronto and requires work on weekends. You are a true news junkie who is interested in everything from current affairs, politics, pop culture, sports, health, technology, lifestyle and beyond. You embody Cross Country Checkup’s core values to be relevant, inclusive, interactive, balanced, candid and inquiring.

CBC’s Cross Country Checkup is Canada’s weekly town hall — a place for raw, honest perspectives on the most pressing issues of the week. For over 55 years, it’s where over half a million Canadians gather to listen to each other and watch every Sunday afternoon.

Working under the direction of the Senior Producer, you have a clear understanding of the program’s mandate. Out of the universe of daily news, you are able to identify the “the talker” , the big weekly issue Canadians most want to talk about, the issues where everyone has something at stake. You are good at formulating topic questions that elicit surprising personal stories and fresh perspectives for our listeners. You’re able to find original, current affairs angles that advance news stories. You are fast, creative and accurate on breaking news chases. You are driven toward finding different perspectives, some of which may conflict with your personal opinions. You have a deep curiosity about what makes people tick – how their personal experiences shape their perspectives and opinions. You are a hard-working self-starter and critical thinker. Your writing and research skills are excellent, thorough and detailed. You’re good at finding interesting, articulate and plain-spoken experts from non-traditional sources. You’re extremely proficient at using a wide range of digital sources to fact check, find expert guests and original first person stories. You’re ready to join a team with a track record for producing award-winning journalism.

You bring a different lens when looking at news stories with an eye to growing and engaging new audiences in a national conversation. You prioritize reflecting a wide range of different, diverse perspectives from the Canadian population each week. You take initiative adding production value to live TV and radio broadcasts through factboards, banners, audio clips and music. Your production skills include editing, mixing, and caller screening. You can manage multiple and often competing priorities. You’re a Google Suite super user, adept at working remotely and using digital tools to improve programming and workflow.

Control room experience for a phone-in program is important. You will be required to vet and screen callers in real-time as well as conducting sound and video checks. You are an effective communicator, a multi tasker, and a collaborative team player.

Finally, you have strong knowledge of the Journalistic Standards and Practices of CBC, especially around recognizing when to escalate questions or concerns. You’re proactive in identifying balance guests, clips and pushback questions to ensure we present both sides of any issue.


With appropriate direction from one or more Producers, participates in the production, direction and/or post-production of a program and/or program segment. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, practices and standards but initiative and independent judgment are required.

Key Tasks:

Research and pitch news-related and evergreen main topic ideas, including guest rollouts; tape, and treatment ideas.
Write q-lines for feature, accountability and Ask Me Anything interviews.
Prepare scripts, fact sheets, backgrounders and contact files; ensures adherence to the style and format of the program.
Fluency in all aspects of audio production including tape gathering, phone clips, streeters, editing, and mixing.
Live television experience including generating banners and graphics is an asset.
Obtain studios and other technical and production resources as needed.
Write, edit and package copy for the web.
Participate in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.
As required, perform the following tasks:
select music, sound effects and/or actuality.
log program line-ups, promos, guest tracking, show prompter, caller logs and music in appropriate information systems.
edit, encode, digitize and package audio and video material for a Website.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:
University degree or equivalent.
Minimum of two years’ relevant experience during which the candidate would gain exposure to journalism and the technology of radio or television broadcasting.
Demonstrated experience working in news and current affairs journalism.
Great editorial judgment and critical-thinking skills.
Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment and with tight deadlines.
Ability to take critical feedback and incorporate it into the work.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to clearly explain concepts to peers.
Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns and methods.
Independent and self-motivated, strong & enthusiastic team player.
Thrives in a spontaneous and live broadcast environment.
Able to work flexible hours and weekends.
Proven capability to learn new technical skills particularly in audio and television production.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
