Full-Time Associate Historical interpreter

Job Description

Salary: $38,207/yr

CLASS SUMMARY:

This position will assist the Historical Interpreter with leading tours at Fort Defiance and other related historical sites. Also, this position will provide assistance through research and writing interpretive material in interpreting the daily lives of Civil War soldiers, Clarksvillians, and other county residents during the early to mid-1800s and the effect the Civil War had upon them (economic, social, religious, cultural, etc.). The position will require the ability to share this information using a variety of methods to include, but not limited to: demonstration, lectures, publications, hands-on activities and coordination with others such as the use of volunteers and Friends groups. The Associate Historical Interpreter will also assist with the daily operation of the interpretive Center and park site.  

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
  • Ability to provide accurate and detailed research of historical events related to Fort Defiance and the Civil War in Clarksville. Assist with preparing final interpretation scripts for the public.
  • Greeting and assisting visitors through the center and at the site, and conducting tours as needed through the center, the fort and other nearby historical landmarks (sometimes in period clothing and dress).
  • Monitors budgets which includes preparing cost estimates for budget recommendations, monitoring expenditures, and maintaining records.
  • Performing administrative duties including, but not limited to, researching and documenting historical information relevant to the site; handling and processing of money and records and ordering supplies as needed; and opening and closing of facility as needed.
  • Keeping accurate records and preparing detailed reports,
  • Attending various departmental and community meetings.
  • Recruiting and supervising volunteers.
  • Performing other administrative, maintenance, and custodial duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
Bachelor’s Degree in History, Education, or a related field from an accredited college or university and one (1) or more years of experience in a historical, gallery, educational, museum, or related environment; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):
Licensing Requirements:
  • Valid Driver’s License.
KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of interpretive center administration and center maintenance requirements;
  • General knowledge of historical sites/interpretive center ethics and practices;
  • Knowledge of Tennessee and Civil War History;
  • Knowledge of educational standards, programs, and trends;
  • Knowledge of the history, customs, and significance of cultural sites and exhibits;
  • Effective grant writing experience.
SKILLS (position requirements at entry):
Skill in:
  • Effective grant writing;
  • Strong research skills;
  • Ability to implement short and long-range goals;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including speaking to groups;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships (co-workers, employees of other city departments and volunteers, staffs of other Civil War sites and Centers);
  • Computer skills;
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Working under various weather conditions both in an inside and outside work environment. Possession of a valid Tennessee Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one. Moderate physical activity to include, but not limited to, walking, lifting, stooping, and climbing to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to bloodborne pathogens.
