Job Description

Summary:

Physics Today, the flagship publication of the American Institute of Physics, is looking for a copyeditor for our monthly magazine and website. The successful candidate will also administer the magazine’s Readers’ Forum department.

 

Essential functions

As part of a team, copyedit material for the monthly print magazine and website. Edit Letters to the Editor and Commentaries and produce the magazine’s Readers’ Forum department. Collaboratively establish and maintain house style. Edit other material, including online articles, as needed.

 

*This role is currently 100% remote and will eventually switch back to our office environment as the Institute continues to respond to the coronavirus, government mandates and considers the best action to keep the AIP staff safe.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree, preferably in English or journalism, is required. A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience copyediting, preferably at a science publication. Familiarity with Chicago style is desirable. Exceptional editing skills and expertise in the written English language (grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation) are essential. The language of physics will be learned on the job. The ideal candidate will have a commitment to excellence, pay rigorous attention to detail, have strong organizational skills, work independently, and be able to meet multiple deadlines. In addition, excellent interpersonal skills are needed, to interact congenially with both other editors and the physics community at large.
