About the Opportunity
The Associate Accountant is a key member of the Accounting team reporting to the Operational Accounting Manager. This position participates in various areas of the accounting process including cash management, fixed assets, month-end close, account reconciliations, regulatory filings, and financial statement reporting. The Associate Accountant also develops working relationships and serves as the first point of contact for business partners.

This position is based in San Francisco, California. Staff are currently expected to work from the Academy offices at least 2 times per week, which may fluctuate based on business needs. About the Accounting Team
Everything we do in the accounting department is focused on providing valuable insight to our internal business partners by delivering timely and accurate financial information, building trust that fosters collaborative relationships, and anticipating and responding to the needs of the Academy. We are seeking a team member who is ready to learn, grow, and contribute to our team and organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Record manual journal entries in conjunction with month-end close, prepare supporting schedules and appropriate documentation for all entries, and coordinate with other staff in preparation for the monthly, quarterly, and annual closing of the general ledger
  • Perform various cash management and reporting tasks including determining account coding and collecting supporting documentation for cash receipts
  • Review expenditures to identify capitalizable assets and determine the depreciable life and depreciation method for those assets
  • Prepare balance sheet account reconciliations including but not limited to cash and fixed assets
  • Research and analyze financial statement line item variances as compared to budget/forecast and prior year and explain the business reasons for the variances
  • Assist in preparing supporting schedules for quarterly and annual financial statements
  • Develop working relationships with fellow team members and business partners and serve as first point of contact for business partners
  • Prepare well-documented working papers in all areas of responsibility in order to support audit inquiries and requests
  • Participate in the documentation of internal control process narratives
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications A successful candidate will have the following:

EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION:

  • Undergraduate Degree (Business or Accounting concentration preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • 0-1 years of relevant accounting experience

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Attention to detail including the ability to repeatedly follow all steps of a process and limit clerical errors
  • Time management skills to proactively manage workload and complete work timely
  • Willingness and ability to learn and enhance utilization of Microsoft Excel and other software/systems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to clearly disseminate information and ask questions
  • Organizational skills to manage an inbox, index digital files, and keep track of deadlines
  • Critical thinking ability including pattern recognition and using available resources to determine the best course of action for non-standard transactions

This position is eligible for overtime pay. There are periods when additional hours and/or weekend work will be expected to fulfill business needs and the overtime hours will be paid at an overtime rate.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, use a computer, and communicate on the phone, in person, and in online meetings/calls. Ability to perform repetitive motions 85% of the time.

Compensation and Benefits
Hourly hiring range: $33.65-$36.06 per hour. Hourly rate will vary based on experience and relevant skills/knowledge set. The Academy offers a total compensation package that emphasizes both base salary and comprehensive benefits.
Schedule: Full-Time, 40 hours per week.
