Job Description

The University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas) invites applications for the position of Assistant Vice President for Student Access and Success/Dean of Students (AVP/Dean of Students). Established as an independent university in 2010, UNT Dallas is the fastest-growing public university in Texas, the only public, 4-year university in the City of Dallas and the most affordable 4-year university in Dallas-Fort Worth. UNT Dallas’ main campus is located in southern Dallas County. UNT Dallas also includes the UNT Dallas College of Law in Downtown Dallas and is part of the University of North Texas System. The university seeks an experienced and collaborative AVP/Dean of Students with a unique blend of leadership skills and experiences. This person should also have a passion for serving students across multiple dimensions of diversity and a comprehensive knowledge of higher education and student affairs principles, theories, and best practices for promoting a student-centered campus community, with a focus on Leadership and Multicultural programs. Reporting to and working in collaboration with the Vice President of Student Access and Success, the AVP/Dean of Students is a cabinet level position and critical member of the division’s senior leadership team.

 

With an overarching focus on student success, the Assistant Vice President/Dean of Students provides leadership and administration for the UNT Dallas Student Affairs Office, including staff supervision, budget management, and the development and assessment of co-curricular programs/services designed to advance student success including counseling, student activities, residential living and learning, students’ rights and responsibilities (student conduct), Title IX, student organizations, new student programs, veteran student services, career services and disability services. The AVP/Dean of Students will ensure the university is in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to Title IX, Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, and The Higher Education Act.

The AVP/Dean of Students serves as chief student advocate, updating the campus community on trends related to student rights and responsibilities. The AVP/Dean of Students will also participate in the development and dissemination of polices on student behavior and civility in an environment where student social justice principles are critical.

  • Provides leadership, administration and evaluation for UNTDallas Office of Student Affairs.
    • Member of University Cabinet and reports to and collaborates with the Vice President of Student Access and Success.
    • Works on special projects as requested by the president.
    • Adheres to the Council for Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) for all areas under Student Affairs.
    • Serves as chief student conduct officer for the campus. Develops training and coordinates the work of the student conduct board.
    • Provides direction for Presidential Scholars, Trailblazer 360, student safety concerns, student engagement, and wellness and prevention education, in addition to other student programs.
    • Oversees Title IX compliance and manages recordkeeping and documentation for complaints and complaint response.
    • Co-leads, with Enrollment Management and Office of the Provost, the university management of Early Intervention Program results, a campaign that supports students who are at-risk academically or socially and helps to determine strategies and follow up for these students.
    • Oversee the revision of existing, and development of new policies related to Student Affairs, including annual updates to the Student Handbook, ensuring that all policies are appropriate and consistent with all other published university policies.
    • Supports and advocates on behalf of UNTDallas students. Along with the assistance from the Student Solutions department, serves as the primary point of contact for students with emergencies/critical situations, complaints or issues, advising and providing referrals to resources as appropriate.
    • Manages the Student Affairs budget, including internal reallocations and requests for funding.
    • Builds relationships and collaborates with faculty and campus units to ensure Student Affairs programs/services support student learning, the university’s mission, and strategic plan.
    • Provides leadership for the assessment of all Student Affairs programs/services.
    • Maintains knowledge of policies/procedures governing student involvement and interprets and communicates policies to campus constituents.
    • Represents Student Affairs on campus, assists with UNT System initiatives, and works with a focus on enhancing the student experience.
    • Attends campus events and supports student leaders and collaborates with university leadership, faculty, and staff to promote participation in Student Affairs activities.
    • Leads, coordinates, and serves on a variety of university committees and task forces including Student Service Fee Advisory Committee, Security Clearance Committee, Campus Assessment, Response and Education (C.A.R.E.) Team, Campus Emergency and Response Team (CERT) and others as assigned by the Vice President.
    • Develops and assesses program/student learning outcomes and establishes a comprehensive database reporting process.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Vice President of Student Access and Success.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in related field and five years of administrative supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• Thorough knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate)
• Thorough knowledge of Texas rules and regulations related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate)
• Thorough knowledge of CAS Standards
• Obtain certification as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator upon employment
• Evidence of a commitment to professional development for self and staff members is necessary
• General working knowledge of legal and policy issues impacting the work of student affairs professionals including but not limited to ADA, Title IX, and constitutional issues
• Experience with budget management
• Ability to plan and conceptualize and make sound, ethical business decisions
• Strong supervisory skills
• Strong presentation skills
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Strong critical thinking skills
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to work some nights and weekends
• Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership, Higher Education, Counseling, or other related field
    • Demonstrated understanding of the role Student Life plays in student success/retention
    • Demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity and social justice
    • Experience in student affairs/student services at an urban university
    • Experience with student service fee management
    • Experience with mentoring programs for students from disadvantaged backgrounds
    • Experience with crisis management and ability to navigate circumstances that require effective negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution skills
    • English/Spanish bi-lingual
