Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in Washington State, that provides students with the latest cutting edge skills relevant to today’s workplace. LWTech offers ten applied bachelor’s degrees, more than 40 associate degrees and 93 professional certificates, in 43 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

LWTech serves the Eastside and is located within the city of Kirkland, which is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Washington. Kirkland is home to companies such as GoDaddy, Google, Astronics and EvergreenHealth, and the college is within minutes from Microsoft and Nintendo.


This is an Annual Renewable position with the possibility of converting to Tenure Track. Develop and teach a variety of instructional objectives and courses related to the welding fabrication and maintenance program. This program leads to an AAS degree in welding fabrication and maintenance technology. Assist in evaluating and modifying courses when necessary to meet the needs of the changes in industry.


Plan and develop a variety of instructional objectives and experiences appropriate to the welding fabrication and maintenance program goals including appropriate general education requirements for degrees and certificates

Teach a variety of welding fabrication and maintenance courses

Identify individual learning needs of students and make appropriate adjustments; provide individual academic/professional-technical guidance and advising to students

Develop and teach productive and constructive work habits, study skills, and core skills as identified by the college; model the communication, computation, and human relations skills required for employment in welding fabrication and maintenance fields

Develop and teach lessons which foster and support cultural diversity and non-discrimination

Develop classroom and laboratory procedures, including safety, in line with identified local, state, and federal policies and procedures; assume and share responsibility for educational facilities and equipment made available

Maintain appropriate records which indicate student progress and meet college grading requirements

Follow disciplinary procedures, as prescribed in college policy, and deal consistently and fairly with all students

Design learning experiences for the unique characteristics of individual students

Participate in self-improvement activities and staff development in the assigned instructional area and technical field

Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of their area and relate specific applications to industry

Develop and maintain industry and/or community support for welding fabrication and maintenance programs by attending craft and advisory committee meetings and maintaining contact with industry for co-op job placement and follow-up activities

Develop, expand, revise, and update effective program materials; assist with program management

Work with college counselors, special needs faculty, and academic faculty to identify general education learning needs for students in order to meet those needs

Supervise work study students and technical aides as assigned

Regular and satisfactory attendance and punctuality; other duties as assigned

In addition, full-time faculty will also:

Maintain regular office hours

Develop curriculum and develop and assess program and educational outcomes

Perform advising, recruiting, and retention activities

Hold regular meetings of the program advisory committee

Take part in college accreditation, program review, and college committees as specified in the faculty bargained agreement

Preform other professional activities as approved by the director or dean

• AAS degree in welding/fabrication or related field and/or equivalent experience and certifications

• AWS CWI/CWE preferred; WABO certifications preferred

• Two years successful full-time trade experience beyond the normal learning period as a welding technician

• Knowledge and five years experience in various types of welding and cutting processes (OAW, SMAW, GMAW, GTAW and PAC)

• Knowledge and experience in various fabrication layout techniques

• Knowledge and experience in welding theory, metallurgy, mathematics and blueprint reading

• Knowledge or experience in instructional methodologies such as competency based education, individualized instruction and hands-on application preferred; adult instruction experience preferred

• Hold or be eligible to obtain a state professional-technical certificate to teach in the above trade area

• Valid First Aid certificate required

• Evidence of recent professional development activity

• Demonstrated ability to work successfully with people from diverse backgrounds

• Must demonstrate computer competency and be committed to customer service

• Willingness to participate on college, division, or department committees

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule


Placement on the faculty salary schedule is based on an individual assessment of education and experience. Salary is negotiable depending upon qualifications; salary is for an academic year (173 days) and as may be adjusted according to the faculty bargained agreement.. Teaching times will vary in mornings, evenings, and Saturdays. Summer quarter employment may be available based on student enrollment. This is a full-time, annual Renewable position with the possibility of converting to Tenure Track.
