Department Summary:

Assistant Director, Custodial Services

Position Summary:

This position assists in the management of custodial services throughout institutional buildings, including residence halls, which supports the success of a diverse population of students.

This position provides a welcoming and inclusive environment by providing customer service to a diverse campus community of employees and students. Working with diverse students, parents, faculty, staff, and other involved parties by providing the highest level of student facing front-line customer service. We dedicate each day to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess supervisory and administrative experience; independent judgment; collaborative leadership; excellent communication; possess knowledge of inventory procedures and logistical operations. This position is required to climb ladders or scaffolds to heights greater than twenty feet; and stand for prolonged periods of time.

• Bachelor’s degree

• Education and experience suitable to fulfill position responsibilities.

• Knowledge of buildings and supporting systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls, etc.), and maintenance.

• Knowledge of common practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in maintenance and custodial work; inventory control; custodial safety practices; sanitation and infection control; including biohazards and blood borne pathogens.

• Custodial and/or commercial experience.

• Supervisory experience, which includes experience onboarding new employees, evaluating staff performance, and providing training & professional development.

• Ability to work with a diversity of people, thought & perspective, and practices.

• Experience with inventory and equipment management.

• Ability to follow good safety practices.

• Demonstrated sound judgment and dependability; ability with prioritizing, problem solving, critical thinking, coordination, and planning skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in management or related degree or completion of a technical degree from a Technical or Vocational school.

• Certification(s) such as APPA EFP or CEFP.

• Experience supervising staff greater than 50 employees in a unionized environment.

• Experience working in an educational facility which includes a residence hall setting.

• Experience using computerized work order systems, email, calendar/scheduling, and word processing systems (Banner, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel)

• A valid driver’s license.

Essential Duties:

CORE DUTIES:1. Ensure all cleaning, cleaning schedules, and maintenance work standards and priorities for the custodial staff are performed and implemented in all academic/administrative buildings and residence halls as outlined in departmental procedures and meet industry best practice.2. Support staff efforts to effectively implement cleaning and maintenance standards & procedures; propose cleaning and light maintenance techniques for services that reflect industry best practices; provide training and professional development to staff.3. Manage the computerized work order requests overseeing the assignment and completion of work order requests per departmental expectations.4. Resolve and address complaints and conflicts pertaining to custodial services and staff; maintain documentation to monitor trends.5. Assess the condition of equipment and present repair versus replacement options to supervisor.6. Manage inventory control to ensure sufficient supplies are always available and accessible to staff in accordance with departmental procedures.7. Identify and evaluate new products and techniques; recommend products and supplies that meet or exceed best practice standards and support a diverse vendor network.8. Coordinate staff work schedules; approve requests for leave and approve reported attendance; record, assign and approve custodial services overtime.9. Assist with planning and facilitating regularly scheduled group and individual staff meetings.10. Oversight of custodial snow removal efforts.11. Coordinate the preparation of spaces being used by summer conferences.12. Act as a campus escort to a diverse campus population including, but not limited to university staff, outside contractors and vendors, when needed.13. Ensure Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are always current and available14. Carry and respond to university issued two-way phone during scheduled work hours.15. Conduct building checks regularly, as outlined by the Associate Director.16. Abide by and administer relevant collective bargaining provisions and university and departmental policies and procedures.17. Serve on committees as assigned by Operations division leadership.

18. Be available on-call, 24 hours a day to respond to emergencies and determine support as needed. Participate in the “manager on-call” rotation list for any physical plant issues that may arise on weeknights and weekends. Smart phone provided.19. Perform related work as assigned.
