Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU) was founded as a 501(c) (3) non-profit medical institution in 2005 aimed at increasing access to health care in medically underserved areas of the Pacific Northwest.

 

The University currently offers the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Master of Arts in Medical Science enrolling over 550 students annually with plans to develop other programs and/or colleges. Interprofessional education partnerships with other universities adds another 100 students to the population. The campus includes 300 employees with academic programming spread over a five state region.

 

PNWU is located in Yakima, WA, a city of approximately 95,000 located in the south central part of the state near the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains in a major agricultural region replete with wineries, vineyards, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. General Summary:

Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU) has multiple open-rank faculty positions available within the developing School of Occupational Therapy (SOT) for individuals with expertise in pediatrics, behavioral health/mental health and adult/older adult rehabilitation. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a new and innovative SOT that joins the successful College of Osteopathic Medicine and new School of Physical Therapy in preparing practitioners to serve rural and medically underserved populations and to be leaders in transforming occupational therapy practice.

 

PNWU is in the initial stages of developing a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT). The entry-level MSOT program has applied for accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). The initial SOT cohort is tentatively scheduled to matriculate in August 2023.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Scholarship of Teaching

  • Developing course materials in specialized area of expertise including writing course syllabi and developing appropriate instructional methods
  • Teaching courses assigned in content area of expertise and meeting program standards for student and peer evaluations Enhancing expertise in teaching content areas through continuing education, practice, and using current literature in teaching content
  • Participating in ongoing curriculum and program assessment
  • Maintaining licensure in the state of Washington and certification as appropriate

 

University and Community Service/Clinical Practice

  • Advising students
  • Assisting in the recruitment and admissions of students
  • Attending school/college events including student orientation and commencement exercises
  • Performing committee assignments at the school/college and university level
  • Performing community service
  • May be required to maintain clinical practice as appropriate
  • May be asked to assist with level I Academic Fieldwork Education coordination

 

Professional Growth, Scholarly, and Creative Activities

  • Engaging in scholarly activity
  • Supervise and mentor student research
  • Maintaining professional development in area of research

 

University-wide Essential Functions 

  • Understands accreditation standards and expectations specific to the department and adheres to policies and procedures to meet or exceed such standards
  • Conducts self appropriately and consistently in accordance with the philosophy and mission of PNWU
  • Other duties as assigned (perform and report on any other reassigned duties for the program)

 

Requirements

Education:

  • Required:
  • Be licensed or eligible for licensure as an occupational therapist in the state of Washington
  • Have earned a minimum of an occupational therapy master’s degree. A doctoral degree (can include an OTD) is preferred. All degrees must have been awarded by an institution that is accredited by a regional accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE)
  • Practicing occupational therapists are encouraged to apply. The SOT provides support and mentorship for those new to the academic setting
  • A minimum of 3 years of clinical experience
  • Record of scholarly productivity commiserate with rank sought
  • Record of institutional, community, and/or professional service commiserate with rank sought
  • Documented expertise in area of assigned teaching as well as delivery method
  • Preferred:
  • Additional professional qualifications (e.g., other specialty certification, or additional degree)

 

Experience:

  • Prior experience working with rural and underserved populations, experience in interprofessional education and simulation experience is preferred.  Excellent interpersonal, communications, and presentation skills
